`What's The Best .Software Of '98?

`The software works with 95% to 96%
`accuracy, Bajarin says. The digital
`recorder can track 40 minutes of contin(cid:173)
`uous speech -
`and up to 80 minutes
`when added memory is purchased.
`Imaging was a popular concept in '98.
`A growing number of home computer
`users want to edit and print personal
`photos. One of Currid's favorite photo(cid:173)
`editing programs is called Photo Im(cid:173)
`pact, from Torrance, Calif.-based Ulead
`Systems Inc. Photo Impact sells for
`$99.95.
`
`"It gives normal people the ability to
`do things that normally only a graphic
`artist could do," Currid said. The
`software can be used for adding high(cid:173)
`lights and effects to photos such as rain
`bubbles, snow and clouds. It can create
`greeting cards,
`invitations and cal(cid:173)
`endars. Photo Impact also can change
`photo lighting, and it removes red eye
`and scratches, Currid says.
`One of the biggest software releases of
`'98 was Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 98.
`The new operating software was Wohl's
`top pick because of its effect on virtually
`all person~} computer users.
`
`The software keeps much the same
`lo,ok and feel as the older Windows 95,
`
`but it adds some key features, Wohl
`says. One is that Windows 98 starts up
`and shuts down faster than its predeces(cid:173)
`sor. Some users report fewer. system
`crashes with the new operating software.
`The software also requires Jess mainte(cid:173)
`nance than the older version.
`
`Windows 98 also supports newer
`technologies such as DVD drives and
`Universal Serial Bus connections used
`with some newer peripherals.
`
`Rounding out the list of top picks is
`accounting software by Mountain View,
`Calif.-based Intuit Inc. While not nearly
`as hot as some other '98 titles, Quick(cid:173)
`Books stiJl has appeal, says Currid, who
`put the title on her list.
`
`Currid says the software goes out of
`its way to make accounting as painless
`as possible. It handles accounts payable,
`accounts receivable, budgeting and tax
`the
`tracking. With added services,
`software can cut checks electronically,
`set up direct deposit for employees and
`find deals on business loans.
`
`"Intuit bas done a masterful job over
`the years improving its product to not
`only do boring accounting," Currid
`said. "If you take just a few minutes to
`set it up, it does the work for you.''

`pick is organization software called TracJ<.er Pro
`from Pasadena, Cali f.-based· Enfish Technolo(cid:173)

`Bajarin and Wohl.
`Tracker Pro is designed to automatically read
`and organize almost all data that flow through
`a personal computer. It boasts the ability to sort
`through all types of data stored on a hard disk,
`the Web or a corporate
`network. The software
`creates a browser-like

`software's search func-
`tion also gets rid of the
`need to remember file names, Bajarin says.
`A hot software category for '98 was speech
`recognition. The trend helped propel software
`from Newton, Mass.-based Dragon Systems
`Inc., a maker of recognition software, near the
`top of the list.· Bajarin and W ohl both selected
`Dragon Systems' ~aturallySpeaking Mobile.
`The package comes with both recognition
`software and a hand-held digital voice recorder
`for changing spoken words into electronic text.
`"I can be recording myself messages and
`notes to clients, then I can download them to
`my. PC, send them as· a voice file or convert
`them and send them as a text message," Bajarin
`said.·

`Bajarin helped pick a list of titles, along with·
