`
`Radar cruise control
`(with vehicle-to-vehicle distance control)
`When the shift lever is in “D” or “4,” you can use the radar control system to drive your vehicle without
`depressing the accelerator pedal as described below.
`The laser radar sensor in this system primarily detects the reflectors of the vehicle ahead of you to
`determine the presence of any vehicle ahead as well as to measure the vehicle-to-vehicle distance.
`The detection range of the sensor is about 100 m ahead.
`When no vehicle is detected ahead:
`Your cruising speed is maintained at the preset speed (from about 50–100 km/h).
`When a vehicle is detected ahead:
`The system controls the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead (vehicle-to-vehicle
`distance)* in proportion to vehicle speed to ensure an appropriate distance up to the preset speed (from
`about 50–100 km/h) while cruising. Therefore, follow-up cruising according to changes in the speed of
`the vehicle ahead is possible. If the vehicle ahead leaves the lane, your vehicle will accelerate
`gradually to the preset speed and then cruise at a fixed speed.
`* The vehicle-to-vehicle distance maintained changes in proportion to vehicle speed. When the vehicle
`speed is slower, the maintained distance will be shorter.
`
`Cruising at a fixed
`speed
`(when no vehicle is
`detected ahead)
`
`Ex.: The preset speed
`is 100 km/h.
`
`Deceleration cruising
`(when a vehicle
`driving slower than
`the preset speed is
`detected ahead)
`Ex.: When cruising at a
`fixed speed of
`100 km/h, the
`vehicle detected
`ahead is moving at
`80 km/h.
`
`Follow-up cruising
`(when following a
`vehicle driving slower
`than the preset
`speed)
`
`Ex: When the preset
`speed is 100 km/h,
`the vehicle ahead
`is moving at
`80 km/h.
`
`Acceleration cruising
`(when a vehicle
`driving slower than
`the preset speed that
`was ahead leaves the
`lane)
`Ex.: When the preset
`speed is 100 km/h,

`had been ahead
`moving at 80 km/h

`Use radar cruise control only on freeways or expressways where the distance between your
`vehicle and any vehicle detected ahead can be generally ensured.

`3. Operation equipment 131
`
` Caution
` Do not overly rely on radar cruise control. The vehicle-to-vehicle distance control has limits.
`When driving, always pay attention to the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead
`as well as surrounding conditions, and depress the brake pedal to decelerate and to ensure
`appropriate vehicle-to-vehicle distance based on driving conditions, keeping safe driving in mind.
` The radar cruise control system does not automatically control the brake pedal. The system
`controls deceleration only with engine braking, so if the vehicle ahead decelerates abruptly
`or if another vehicle cuts in ahead of you, inadequate braking will make your vehicle closer to
`the vehicle ahead of you. In such a case, the warning light on the multi-information display
`flashes and a warning beeps to alert you. (See page 138.)
` This system does not provide assistance in cases in which you fail to properly look ahead
`(for example, if you look aside or lose concentration while driving).
` Radar cruise control should not be used under any of the following conditions to avoid serious
`injury or death.
`
`In bad weather (such as rain, fog, or snow):
`The distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead cannot be measured accurately. If
`the wipers are operated at high or low speeds, radar cruise control is automatically canceled.
`(In the case of intermittent wiper operation, it is not canceled.)
` On roads with heavy traffic or at sharp bends:
`As a speed appropriate to road conditions cannot be maintained, serious injury or death
`could result.
` On slippery road surfaces (icy or snow-covered road surfaces):
`The tires will race and you will be unable to control your vehicle.
` On steep downhill slopes:
`As the preset speed will be easily exceeded because of insufficient engine braking on steep
`downhill slopes, serious injury or death could result.
`In traffic conditions under which acceleration and deceleration are frequently
`repeated:
`As a speed appropriate to traffic conditions cannot be maintained, serious injury or death
`could result.
` When entering exit lanes, service areas, or parking areas (exiting from the main road)
`on a freeway or other roads while using radar cruise control:
`When using radar cruise control and following a vehicle driving
`slower than the preset speed on a main road and you exit the
`main road, serious injury or death could result since the sensor
`will not detect a vehicle ahead and your vehicle will thus
`accelerate to the preset speed.

`132 3. Operation equipment
`
` Caution
` As this system operates by detecting primarily the reflectors of the vehicle ahead, the presence
`of a vehicle driving ahead cannot be accurately detected in the following cases, resulting in
`improper vehicle-to-vehicle distance.
` The vehicle ahead has higher ground clearance (such as a trailer), which means that the
`placement of the reflectors is in a higher position.
` The rear section of the vehicle ahead is extremely dirty.
` The vehicle ahead is flinging up water or snow from the road.
` Protective film is attached to the reflectors on the vehicle ahead, or such reflectors are
`damaged.
` Depending on the road configuration (curves, etc.) and your vehicle’s condition (steering wheel
`maneuvering and lane position), vehicles in adjacent lanes or surrounding objects may be
`detected temporarily, resulting in deceleration and activation of the approach warning.
` Radar cruise control does not work nor issue an approach warning when the vehicle ahead is
`stopped.
` Vehicles stopped at a tollgate, at the end of a traffic jam, or for other reasons

`
`System operation
`■ When a vehicle is detected ahead
`The cruise control system controls vehicle speed
`to ensure the preset vehicle-to-vehicle distance.
` The multi-information display shows the
`preset settings (preset speed, whether any
`vehicle detected ahead, and selected
`vehicle-to-vehicle distance).
`
`
`
`Information
`The system controls the vehicle speed up
`to the preset speed (about 50–100 km/h).
`
`
`
`
`
`
`■ When the vehicle detected ahead leaves
`the lane
`Your vehicle will accelerate gradually up to the
`preset speed and then cruise at a fixed speed.
` The multi-information display shows the
`preset settings (preset speed, whether any
`vehicle detected ahead, and selected
`vehicle-to-vehicle distance).
`
`To temporarily accelerate or decelerate
`■ To accelerate
`Depress the accelerator pedal.
`When you release the accelerator pedal, the
`vehicle will return to the control prior to
`acceleration.
`■ To decelerate
`Depress the brake pedal.
` If you use the brake pedal, cruise control is
`canceled.
` The multi-information display switches to
`ready mode.
`
`
`
`Information
`
` While accelerating to the preset speed,
`if a vehicle is detected ahead, your
`vehicle will resume vehicle-to-vehicle
`distance control (follow-up cruising).
` Your vehicle will automatically
`accelerate up to the preset speed. If
`you want to accelerate quickly, push
`the control lever upward and release it
`or depress the accelerator pedal.
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`To return to the control prior to the deceleration,
`push the control lever upward and release it.
` The multi-information display again shows
`the preset settings.
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`
`Information
`
`While vehicle-to-vehicle distance control
`(follow-up cruising) is on, in principle
`acceleration and deceleration are
`automatically performed in proportion to
`the speed of the vehicle detected ahead.
`When you change lanes and need to
`accelerate, depress the accelerator pedal
`to accelerate or, if your vehicle gets closer
`to the vehicle ahead because the vehicle
`ahead decelerates abruptly or another
`vehicle cuts in ahead of you, depress the
`brake pedal to slow down your vehicle.

`
`Changing the preset speed
`There are two methods: change the preset
`speed according to the procedures described in
`2 and 3 of “Setting the radar cruise control,” or
`use the control lever as described below.
`
`1 Operate the control lever.
` Press the control lever upward and hold it
`there to increase the preset speed.
` Press the control lever downward and hold it
`there to reduce the preset speed.
`
`Increases the
`preset speed
`
`Reduces the
`preset speed
`
`
`
`2 When the preset speed displayed on the
`multi-information display reaches the desired
`speed, release the control lever.
`
`
`
`The displayed preset speed increases or
`decreases.
`
` Caution
`
`
`While vehicle-to-vehicle distance control
`(follow-up cruising) is on, your cruising speed is
`regulated in proportion to the speed of the
`vehicle ahead, so even if you push the control
`lever upward to increase the preset speed, the
`vehicle will not accelerate. However, the preset
`speed itself will be increased by this operation,
`so after the vehicle ahead leaves the lane, your
`vehicle will continue to accelerate up to the
`preset speed despite your intention. When
`changing the preset speed, check the preset
`speed setting displayed on the multi-information
`display.

`
`Changing the vehicle-to-vehicle distance
`setting
`
` Caution
`
` 
`
` Select the vehicle-to-vehicle distance in
`consideration of traffic conditions.
`The approximate maintained
`vehicle-to-vehicle distance for each distance
`setting when driving at 80 km/h is shown
`below:
` Long: about 55 m
` Middle: about 45 m
` Short: about 40 m
`The slower the vehicle speed, the shorter
`the distance compared to the figures above.
` During long downhill driving, etc., the
`vehicle-to-vehicle distance maintained will
`be shorter than the selected distance.
`
`You can select one of the following three
`vehicle-to-vehicle distances: “Long,” “Middle” or
`“Short.” Each maintained distance changes in
`proportion to vehicle speed, so when the vehicle
`speed is slower, the maintained distance will be
`shorter than the designated distance.
` When the multi-information display shows
`the radar cruise control screen, each time
`you push the vehicle-to-vehicle distance
`change switch, the setting changes, from
`“Long” to “Middle” to “Short” and then back to
`“Long.”
`
`
`
`Information
` While vehicle-to-vehicle distance
`control is on or when the
`multi-information display is in ready
`mode (showing “CRUISE READY”),
`you can change the vehicle-to-vehicle
`distance setting.
` When the engine is turned off, the
`vehicle-to-vehicle distance setting is
`reset to “Long.” (The
`vehicle-to-vehicle distance is always
`set to “Long” upon turning on the
`ignition switch.)
` When the multi-information display is
`showing a screen other than the radar
`cruise control screen, it is impossible
`to change the vehicle-to-vehicle
`distance setting.

`Canceling radar cruise control
`
`Pull the control lever forward or press the main
`switch to turn radar cruise control off.
` When using the control lever to cancel cruise
`control, the multi-information display screen
`switches to ready mode (showing “CRUISE
`READY”).
` When using the main switch to cancel cruise
`control, the cruise control indicator light on
`the meter turns off and the multi-information
`display screen switches to another screen.

`
` Cruise control is automatically canceled in
`the following cases.
` When you depress the brake pedal
`
`If the vehicle speed falls below about
`40 km/h
` When the slip indicator light flashes and
`a warning beeps due to VSC activation
`(This occurs when the vehicle is about to
`skid.) (See page 62.)
` When the wipers are operated at high
`(HI) or low (LO) speeds
` When the ETC is set to snow mode
`(SNOW)
` If you use the control lever or depress the
`brake pedal to cancel cruise control, when
`you push the control lever upward and
`release it, the vehicle will resume the control
`prior to the cancel operation and the
`multi-information display will show the preset
`settings again. However, if the vehicle speed
`falls below about 40 km/h, the vehicle will not
`resume the control prior to the cancel
`operation.
`
`Information
`
`
`While cruising at a fixed speed using radar
`cruise control, cruise control will not be
`canceled even if you downshift from “D” to
`“4,” so engine braking will not be applied.
`To slow down, use the control level to reset
`the cruise control to a slower speed or
`depress the brake pedal.

`
`Approach warning
`
`Warning message
`
`In the following cases, the warning loops, the
`multi-information display indicator comes on, and
`cruise control is automatically canceled. At the
`same time, the radar cruise control indicator light
`flashes and a warning message appears on the
`multi-information display.
`
` When the system determines that it is
`difficult to measure the vehicle-to-vehicle
`distance because of bad weather (the wipers
`are operating at high or low speeds due to
`rain, fog, snow, or other conditions), or there
`is intense light from the front (such as
`sunlight.)
`
` 
`
`While cruising in vehicle-to-vehicle distance
`control mode (follow-up cruising), if your vehicle
`gets closer to the vehicle ahead of you due to
`insufficient braking because the vehicle ahead
`decelerates abruptly or another vehicle cuts in
`ahead of you, the multi-information display
`flashes and a warning beeps to alert you as
`shown below. In such a case, depress the brake
`pedal or take other measures to decelerate and
`ensure an appropriate vehicle-to-vehicle
`distance.
` The warning beeps.
` The multi-information display continues to
`flash.
`
`
`
`BAD WEATHER:
`CRUISE NOT AVAILABLE
`
`
`
`The screen continues to flash.
`
`
`
` Caution
`
` If the warning beeps frequently, do not use
`radar cruise control.
` The approach warning may not activate
`even if your vehicle drives closer to the
`vehicle ahead under the following
`conditions:
` The difference in speed between your
`vehicle and the vehicle ahead is small.
`(Your vehicle and the vehicle ahead are
`cruising at almost the same speed.)
` The vehicle ahead is cruising at a speed
`faster than yours. (The distance
`between vehicles will increase.)
` You are depressing the accelerator
`pedal.
` The warning does not work when the vehicle
`ahead is stopped at a tollgate or at the end
`of a traffic jam.
` Depending on the road configuration
`(curves, etc.) and your vehicle’s condition
`(steering wheel maneuvering and lane
`position), vehicles in adjacent lanes or
`surrounding objects may be detected
`temporarily, resulting in deceleration and
`activation of the approach warning.
`
`
`
`
`
`In this case, turn the main switch off once and set
`it again after the condition or weather has
`cleared up.
`When the ETC is set to snow mode (SNOW), the
`warning message appears and the setting
`operation cannot be performed even after the
`main switch has been turned on.
`
`
`Advice
`
`
`If the setting operation cannot be
`performed or the warning message still
`appears even after the weather has
`cleared up, the system may have
`malfunctioned. Although there is no
`problem with continuing to drive, contact
`your Toyota dealer for an inspection.

`Information
` If you turn the main switch off while a
`warning message is being displayed,
`the warning message is cleared and
`the multi-information display switches

`main switch on again, the warning
`message is displayed again.
` You can switch the multi-information
`display screen to another screen even
`while a warning message is being
`displayed.
`
` 
`
` When the system cannot measure the
`vehicle-to-vehicle distance because the front
`of the laser radar sensor is dirty.
`
`CLEAN RADAR SENSOR
`
`
`
`In this case, turn the main switch off once, clean
`the sensor glass with a soft cloth, etc. and then
`set the cruise control again.
`
`
`Advice
`
`If the setting operation cannot be
`performed or the warning message still
`appears even after the sensor glass has
`been cleaned, the system may have
`malfunctioned. Although there is no
`problem with continuing to drive, contact
`your Toyota dealer for an inspection.

`
`CHECK CRUISE SYSTEM
`
`
`
`If this message appears, stop your vehicle in a

`the vehicle in order to reset the system.
`
`
`
`Advice
`
`If the setting operation cannot be
`performed or the warning message still

`
`Sensor
`
`
`To ensure that the radar cruise control system
`will function properly while driving, observe the
`following:
` Always keep the laser radar sensor glass
`clean. When cleaning, use a soft cloth, etc.
`and be careful not to damage the sensor.
` Avoid applying strong force or allowing
`impacts to occur around the laser radar
`sensor. Do not touch the optical axis
`adjustment bolts to the side of the sensor. An
`incorrect laser radar sensor alignment will
`result in system malfunction. A special
`device is required to adjust the laser radar
`sensor alignment. Be sure to have the
`sensor adjusted by your Toyota dealer.
` Do not attach stickers or accessories around
`the laser radar sensor.
`In particular, do not affix stickers (including
`transparent stickers) on the sensor glass.
`Doing so may result in laser malfunction.
