`UNITED STATES PATENT ' OFFICE.
`
`FERDINAND WOLKOW, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
`
`COAT-FASTENER.
`
`SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,087, dated April 22, 1890.
`
`Applicationfiled May 21,1889. Serial No. 311,569.
`(No model.)
`
`To all whom it may concern:
`Be it known that I, FERDINAND WOLKOW,
`of Minneapolis, in the county of l-Iennepin and
`State of Minnesota, have invented certain
`new and useful Improvements in Coat—Fast—
`eners; and I do hereby declare the following
`to be a full, clear, and exact description of the
`invention, such as will enable others skilled
`in the art to which it appertains to make and
`use the same.
`.
`My invention relates to an improve mentin
`coat-fasteners.
`.
`The object- is to provide a simple, neat, and
`effective device for holding a gentleman’s
`coat from flying open when left unbuttoned.
`\Vith this end in View my invention con-
`sists in certain features of construction and
`combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter
`described, and pointed out in the claim.
`In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1
`represents the fastener in position for use,
`holding the two front edges of the coat. Fig.
`2 is an enlarged View of the fastener, and Figs.
`3 and 4 represent the ends of the fastener in
`detail.
`A represents that part of the front of the
`coat on which the buttons are commonly
`placed, and B represents that portion of the
`front of the coat in which the button-holes
`are formed, corresponding to the buttons on
`the part A.
`The body of the fastener consists of an elas-
`tic strip, preferably a piece of flat silk elas-
`tic O, the ends of which are secured in end
`caps r: c’. The end caps are preferably formed
`of thin metal, and the ends of the elastic are
`conveniently secured therein by means of
`small rivets 02. The said caps are also pref-
`erably rounded or made in any well-known
`neat or ornamental shape. A bar D is secured
`to the end cap 0 conveniently by means of a
`small link E, which loosely engages an eye d,
`secured to the cap 0, and the staple or eye 6,
`secured to the central portion of the bar D._
`The opposite cap 0’ has fixed thereto a pin of
`the safety-pin type, the guard-bar and back
`of the pin F being fixed conveniently by sol—
`dering to the cap 0’, while the pin portion f
`is free to be thrown into and out of engage-

`
`ment with the guard. A portion of the pin
`Gr, between its back and pin portion proper,
`is made in circular or curved form, and is
`adapted to embrace the central fastening of
`thc‘coat—button, and when in such position
`will rest concealed beneath the button.
`The bar D is intended to be inserted from
`the front through the button-hole and to rest
`concealed beneath the lapel of the coat, so
`that when the fastener is in position for use,
`as shown in Fig. 1,it- presents the appearance
`‘ of a pair of neatly—finished caps connected by
`a band of elastic material.
`As thus constructed, the fastener becomes
`a convenient and useful article to prevent the
`front portions of the coat from flying open in
`the wind, and at the same time admitting
`sufficient air to render the coat less oppres—
`sive than when tightly buttoned. The elas-
`tic section will also permit the insertion of
`the hand into either the vest or coat pockets
`without unfastening the fastener, and the
`outward curl of the front edges of the coat
`will be avoided.
`It is evident that slight changes might be
`resorted to in the forms and arrangements of
`the several parts without departing fromthe
`spirit and scope of my invention, and hence
`Ido not wish to limit myself strictly to the
`construction herein set forth; but,
`Having thus fully described my invention,
`what I claim as new, and desire to secure by
`Letters Patent, is—
`The herein-described coat-fastener, consist-
`ing of an elastic strip provided with end caps,
`a bar loosely connected with one of the caps,
`and a pin having a back portion fixed to the
`opposite cap, a point free to swing into and
`out of engagement with a guard, and a curved
`portion adapted to receive a button, substan-
`tially as set forth.
`In testimony whereof I have signed this
`specification in the presence of two subscrib-
`ing witnesses.
