`
`Introduction
`
`Version 6
`
`Thank you for investing in an ENCO Digital Audio Delivery System, a product that allows
`multiple users to access high quality (CD/DAT) stereo audio stored digitally on a shared
`data n·etwork. DAD has been developed using a modular approach which enables a
`complete system to range anywhere from a single stand alone workstation wtth a single
`channel of record/playback capability to a faciltty wide, multi-user, mulli-channel per user
`audio network.
`
`The building block for a DAD system is the DAD486x workstation. This unit has been
`specifically designed to meet the operational needs of both live broadcast and studio
`production.
`II combines high quality, random access audio in a compact, self contained
`package with an extremely friendiy control interface. The operator is able to perform
`standard record and playback functions with lillie or no training, while editing and many
`other powerful production features become routine after just a few hands-on sessions.
`Some of the DAD486x features include:
`
`'high quality 16 bit digital stereo audio with user selectable sample rates up
`to 50 KHz;
`.
`
`·hard disk storage for random access to alj stored audio with selectable
`data compression to extend total record time;
`
`.
`'intuitive graphic interface featuring a touch screen emulating the control
`features of familiar broadcast hardware maximizing operator acceptance;
`
`'user programmable PRIORITY PUIY buttons for instant access to priority
`playbacks;
`
`'user programmable PUlYLISTs for automatic playback sequencing;
`
`'intuitive graphic EDIT functions for simple start and end cue adjustment,
`auxiliary cue point manipulation, optional cut and paste audio construction,
`.counldown timer programming and audio transition construction;
`
`'multiple stereo record/playback channels per workstation available with
`optional DSP hardware/software, multiple workstations may be networked
`via optional Ethernet hardware/software;
`
`'rugged "broadcast quality' hardware construction.
`
`Each DAD486x stand-alone workstation is buill on a PC/AT (486) platform and stores
`digitized audio on an internal hard drive. Each unit is built from premium grade "off-the(cid:173)
`shelf' computer hardware. The only non-standard component is a proprietary DS?

`
`(Digital Signal Processor) circuit board; this unit handles all of the digital signal
`processing functions, leaving the 486 CPU free to run the graphic interface and database
`operations.
`-
`
`Each DSP circuit poard can simultaneously process tWo signals (one channel of stereo
`audio). Multiple DSP boards can be installed in each workstation, providing functions
`similar to multiple discrete record/playback machines; however, no additional rack space
`is required, and all control is provided through a single interface.
`
`In a multi-user network configuration, individual workstations operate as described
`above; however, fhe audio for each workstation is no longer stored on an internal hard
`drive. Instead, the audio is located in a shared file server, providing every workstation
`with direct access to the complete database. No time or disk space is wasted making
`several copies of the same audio data. Even though all users share the same database,
`they operate independently of others in the system.
`Interconnections are accomplished
`via a singie coaxial cable (twisted pair or fiber optic cable also available).
`
`Operation of the DAD486x is straight forward and easy to learn, thanks to its highiy
`intuitive computer graphic/louch screen interface. The system provides the user with
`standard record and piayback functions, using a familiar push button: based control
`In addition. the operator has finger tip access to easy-ta-use editing, random
`panel.
`access playback buttons and pewerful organizational and Library maAagement
`functions. The DAD486x interface combines unci uttered graphics, intuitive labelling and
`a variety of helpfUl "pop-up" dialogue boxes to allow the operator to learn new features
`while working with familiar ones.
`
`Due to its computer based design, all system functions are also controllable via a serial
`port {or through a network}, making the DAD486x ideal for remote control and
`automation applications as well.
`
`The DAD486x is designed as a direct replacement for existing tape based
`record/playback Systems.
`In most applications, it will use your existing audio and remote
`control connections. However, quite a number of interconnection and control options
`are available with this unit, and we suggest you r!,view Section 1, System Setup and
`Installation, and Section 10, External Automation, for more information.
`
`Using This Manual
`
`Like the DAD486x, this manual was developed with the operator in mind. Each and
`every control function has been documented in as straight forward a manner as possible.
`Many features of the DAD486x are intuitive in nature, and the Graphic User Interface
`provides a familiar and easy to use control panel. Operation via a QWERTY keyboard is
`also supported for the operator that is so inclined.

`
`DAD486X
`
`Operation Manual
`
`Version 6
`
`The manual is laid out in a logical series, which should take the reader from installation
`and setup, through'a brief tutorial, and then into the overall features of the system, from
`the basic to the most advanced. This order is set up to correspond with the natural
`exploration and use of the DAD486x, and we strongly recommend you take this path,
`rather than "hop around."
`.
`
`Most operators will find it easiest to learn the system simply by "playing" with it. This is
`perfectly acceptable and quite safe. Most controls are self explanatory, and many of
`them will invoke "pop-up" information windows. These are graphic boxes which will
`present choices, ask questions or warn the operator that the current operation could
`'permanently change data. The operator is always presented with a CANCEL or a QUIT
`button to allow leaVing a function wijhout making any changes.
`In addition, the DAD486x
`Security System can be set to prevent users from selecting any potentially damaging
`options.
`
`The DAD486x, while simple and easy to use, is nonetheless a system with great flexibility
`and many features: Plan to spend several days after installation familiarizing yourself
`with all the standard features, and investigating some of the alternate features and
`configurations available to you in the standard package. This will be time well spent, and
`will enable you to avoid any usurprises" later on, as well as gain full appreciation and
`.knowledge of DAD486x System.
`
`Conventions Used in This Mimual
`
`The DAD486x user interface consists of several full frame:graphic screens and a variety
`of overlaying pop-ups, each of which contain buttons, slide controls, list areas and other
`features. Throughout this manual we will use several styles of text to help identify the
`type of feature we are describing. The conventions are as follows:
`
`UNDERLINED UPPERCASE will be used to refer to a particular full frame
`screen. Example: LIBRARY.
`
`Underlined Upper/Lower case will be used to refer to individual pop-up
`graphics. Example: Playlist. -
`
`BOLD UPPERCASE will be used when we refer to a labelled button or
`control feature within a screen. Example: PLAY.
`
`ALL UPPERCASE will be used to refer to a control or feature which has no
`explicit label. The text will describe the feature's implicit function. Example:
`LEFT CHANNEL INPUT LEVEL.
`
`Bold Upper/Lower case is user to refer to Library Groups used with the
`DAD Library. Example: Spots.
