`
`TThe LANSONIC™ Digital Audio Server (DAS-750) is a revolutionary new high performance audio component that can play, store and
`stream digital music files. Combining a proven Ethernet network interface with high-end audio circuitry, the DAS-750 puts you in control of
`your music -- by giving you simple and convenient access to all your music from virtually any place on the network. The DAS unit's
`available internal hard drive centrally stores and organizes all your music so you'll never have to hunt down that favorite CD again. In
`addition, the DAS unit's multi-user network capability allows several people to simultaneously listen to different music in different rooms. It
`includes full support for streaming audio (both transmit and receive) and boasts a "drag and drop" file interface using the Network
`Neigborhood icon in Windows 95/98/NT/2000.
`
`The DAS-750 features a built-in Ethernet interface to network digital audio through a Local Area Network (LAN). The result is that the DAS
`unit bridges the gap between a traditional audio system and a home or office LAN. Stereo
`components, such as CD players, tape recorders, and most others can be connected to the
`network through the DAS unit and form part of an Audio Neighborhood™ in much the same
`way that computers are regularly connected into a "Network Neighborhood". Using this feature,
`two or more DAS units, in different rooms or offices, can be connected and controlled across a
`LAN to allow audio equipment in one room (i.e. a CD player) to be played out through the DAS unit in the other room. Since the music is
`sent digitally across the LAN, the DAS units eliminate the need for long runs of speaker wire between rooms and prevents any analog
`noise from corrupting the music. Additionally, the LANSONIC™ Digital Audio Server is fully compatible will standard TCP/IP protocols (the
`same standard that makes up the Internet), so that DAS units can simply be added to an existing LAN and share it with an array of
`computers, printers, or other network devices.
`
`In addition to its network capabilities, the LANSONIC™ Digital Audio Server is available with significant internal hard disk storage, allowing
`music to be centrally stored and organized and then played back, either locally or through the network. This
`capability opens the door to a wide range of possibilities. For example a valuable CD, record or tape
`collection can be archived to a DAS unit, put away for safe keeping, and then played repeatedly without ever
`having to change a record, tape or disk. Simultaneously, a second DAS unit in another room (or alternately
`a Windows 95/98/NT/2000 PC) can access and play a different song from the same music collection stored
`on the first DAS unit. Music stored inside the DAS-750 is typically arranged by by artist and album making
`it easy to find a single song, or to play all the songs from a favorite artist or artists. A host of playlist
`capabilities are supported using the popular .m3u format. The DAS-750 supports up to two internal drives
`and multiple units can be networked together allowing even the
`largest music collection
`to be
`accommodated. Dual drive configurations of 120 GB are currently available which can support over 2100
`hours of music at 128 kbps - equal to 42,000 three minute songs. A diskless model is also available. The diskless model is designed to
`be used as an expansion unit in conjunction with a first DAS unit equipped with a hard disk or with a PC.
`
`The LANSONIC™ Digital Audio Server incorporates both the popular WAV and MP1/MP2/MP3 audio formats and is compatible with the
`volumes of legal MP3 music available today. Through an array of popular web sites, users can enjoy thousands of songs which can be
`legally downloaded and then played in virtually any DAS equipped room or office. In addition the DAS-750 is designed to both transmit or
`receive streaming audio, so it is inherently Internet ready. Any DAS unit can be set for reception of streaming MP3 audio from an array of
`Internet radio sites from around the world. In addition, the DAS unit is designed for broadcast of streaming audio, so people on the network
`can easily tune in.
`
`The DAS unit's extensive network capabilities make it a snap to get your existing music collection onto the unit without having to swap
`wires or move equipment. Just hook the DAS unit up to your stereo and your LAN, and then after a simple setup process any Windows
`95/98/NT/2000 PC will show the DAS-750 unit(s) under their Network Neighborhood icon. Moving files onto the DAS unit is then as simple
`as "drag and drop". You can also map the DAS units internal hard drive as a network drive under Windows and virtually any PC program
`can then interact with the DAS unit's hard drive. For example a music CD can be encoded (i.e. ripped) on a PC and the music can be
`stored on the DAS-750's available internal hard drive. Similarly any compatible media player (Winamp, Musicmatch, Windows Media,
`etc...) can see and play any song stored on the DAS units available internal drive while the DAS unit can be setup to see and play any
`shared music file stored on the PC. In fact there's no need for copying between drives or keeping multiple copies on different machines --
`the network connectivity allows any machine (DAS or PC) to access all the music (or other data) regardless of which machine its actually
`stored on! This extensive network file capability is all built into the DAS-750 and requires no Lansonic software to be installed on the PC.

`
`A:The DAS unit can be ordered with a variety of storage options, starting with diskless
`operation (ideal for adding capability in additional rooms or offices) and going up over 120 GB.
`The baseline configuration contains a f 20 GB hard disk which equates to about 350 hours of music at 128 kbps. The DAS unit contains
`two drive bays and supports upgrades for two 60 GB drives, allowing over 2000 hours of music (or 40,000 three minute songs) to be stored
`internally ... not bad for something about the size of the phonebook.
`
`Q: Can I buy the unit without a disk and add my own hard drive?
`
`A: You can use or add a hard drive on your PC and access it from the DAS-750 across the network. However, for a host of reasons,
`including warranty, safety and technical, the DAS unit is not designed to allow customers to add their own internal hard drive. Specifically
`the drives must be custom configured and installed at the factory (or by authorized service personnel) in order to operate correctly. For
`safety reasons (there are AC line level voltages inside that could be dangerous) customers are strongly advised not to open the case and
`doing so may invalidate the warranty.
`
`Q: What are the benefits of using the DAS-750 to play music versus just using a PC?
`
`A: There are many benefits to using the DAS-750 rather than using a PC. First the unit was designed to be simple and easy to use with a
`builtin front panel display, control dial and infrared capability. The DAS unit is small, light and has a large storage capacity. It is designed
`to fit right in with a standard stereo system and is optionally rack mountable. The DAS-750 features a true high fidelity audio section which
`far outperforms what most PCs can produce, and it includes an extensive array of standard analog and digital audio inputs and outputs.
`The DAS unit is very quiet without the hum and noise of a PC. Furthermore the DAS-750 was designed for reliable continous operation
`without the extensive crashes and reboots which plague many PCs. Finally there are host of other features and capabilities which are all
`builtin -- the user does not have to plan on installing and troubleshooting alot of hardware and software before anything happens.
`
`Q: What compression rates are supported?
`
`A: The DAS unit decodes all the standard MP1/MP2/MP3 compression rates which range from 32 kbps to 448 kbps with many rates
`(including 128 kbps) in between. Recording is performed using MP2 or WAV files.
`
`Q: How do I hook the DAS to my other audio equipment.
`
`A: The DAS unit has several analog (RCA) and digital (optical and COAX) connections which can be connected to most stereo amplifiers,
`receivers, CD players, etc… Plug it in, add your music and off you go.
`
`Q: What type of network connections does the unit support?
`
`The DAS unit includes a built in 10-Base-T (i.e. 10 Mbps) Ethernet connection. DAS units are typically connected to a new or existing LAN
`via a low cost hub or directly to a PC with a crossover cable. Many dual-rate hubs are available to allow the DAS unit to interconnect with
`100-Base-T (i.e. 100 Mbps) networks. A DAS unit can also be connected to wireless Ethernet network using a growing number of wireless
`LAN products.
`
`Q: Does the unit require a computer?
`
`A: No, most of the main functions do not require a computer. For example using the DAS unit as an MP3 jukebox to playback an archived
`music collection or streaming audio between multiple DAS equipped rooms does not require a computer. Certain functions are made easier
`(such as editing playlists or managing files) if a computer is available on the network.
`
`Q: Can music files I already have on my PC be transferred to the DAS unit and then served around my network?
`
`A: Yes, files can be transferred to the DAS unit, and then played either locally or across the network, following required serial copy
`management checks. Transferring files across a LAN from a Windows PC to the DAS unit is quick and easy. The DAS unit shows up on
`the PC under Network Neighborhood, and a simple drag and drop interface is used to move files onto the DAS unit. In fact the DAS unit
`looks just like a network drive to the PC (you can map it as a Network Drive under Windows 95/98) so just about any PC program can be
`used with the DAS unit to access MP3 files. This provides for all sorts of network-enabled capabilities. For example music stored on the
`DAS unit can be played on any networked computer using an MP3 player program (like WINAMP, Musicmatch, Windows Media Player,
`etc...). Similarly music stored on a networked PC can be played on any DAS unit connected to the network.
`
`Q: Can I play or record a CD across the network?
`web.archive.org/web/20000817023740/http://www.lansonic.com/faq_3_1_00.htm
`
`1/3
`
`Yamaha Corporation of America Exhibit 1013 Page 9
`
`

`
`Lansonic Digital Audio Server and MP3 Player
`8/23/13
`A: Absolutely, If two DAS units are connected to a LAN, a CD player connected to one unit can be played out or recorded by a second
`DAS unit in another room. However all recording is limited by SCMS rules, so second generation copies of a copyrighted original disk are
`not permitted.
`
`Q: Does the DAS unit use an Internet connection?
`
`A: Certain features of the device use an Internet connection, but it is not required. For example the Internet Radio reception needs an
`Internet (preferably higher speed DSL or cable modem) connection. Note the unit can also serve (i.e. transmit) about 30 connections of
`Internet radio, but this requires enough bandwidth to support all the connections.
`
`Q: Does the DAS unit require a network or LAN?
`
`A: Many advanced features of the device make use of a network, but even without the network the DAS unit can still be used to store,
`organize and play a valuable record/tape/CD collection. This eliminate all the wear-and-tear on the music and eliminates the need to flip
`the record/tape/disk every 30-60 minutes.
`
`Q: Are other compression standards being supported?
`
`A: At present the DAS-750 supports the MP1/MP2/MP3 and WAV formats, but we expect other standards to be added in the future,
`including a number of possibilities being developed internally. The unit is fully software upgradeable.
`
`Q: When will the DAS units be available?
`
`A: NOW! The unit is currently shipping to customers who have preordered the unit. The shipping schedule for new orders is currently
`about 2-3 weeks.
`
`Q: What are the dimensions of the DAS unit?
`
`A: The dimensions of the DAS unit are consistent with standard low-profile audio components.
` 17" l x 3"H x 10"W. Weight is about 10-12 lbs depending on the # of internal disk drives.
`
`Q: How quiet is the unit?
`
`A: If you've ever tried putting a PC in your living room you've probably noticed that it generates alot of annoying noise that many people
`object to (the noise is considerably more noticable in a quiet living room than it is in an office). We recognized this issue and so the DAS-
`750 was designed from the outset to be very quiet. We specifically avoided using a PC motherboard so that the DAS unit would not
`require a noisy cooling fan (a PC motherboard requires so much power and generates so much heat that without one or more cooling fans
`it would quickly overheat and fail). In addition we developed our patent pending SuperQuiet™ Drive Technology which is included on all
`DAS models with an internal drive. This key feature greatly reduces the noise generated by the hard drive to almost inaudible levels. The
`result is the quietest unit of its type that is available today -- a feature that really has to be NOT heard to be appreciated.
`
`Q: How much does it cost?
`
`A: Pricing starts at $695 for the diskless configuration and models with internal drive start at $995 for the 20 GB drive (see the Products
`page for a complete listing).
`
`Q: What is Lansonic™ ?
`
`A: Lansonic™ is a new product line from Digital Voice Systems, Inc. (DVSI), a leader in the field of voice compression for over 12 years.
`DVSI is headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts and can be accessed via the web page at: www.dvsinc.com. We have a long and
`successful history of developing and delivery high technology hardware and software products.
`
`Q: Does the unit contain a CD player?
`
`A: No, the unit is designed to connect to external CD player or changer or to use/share a CD-ROM drive in a networked PC. We also
`believe that ripping CD's is best performed on PC where a keyboard, monitor and internet connection are all available. Once the PC has
`ripped all the tracks it is a simple matter to transfer them to (or stream them from) the DAS unit using its extensive network capabilities.
`This network sharing feature can also be used with CD-R/W, CD-R, DVD-ROM, or virtually any other PC storage device that can be shared
`in Windows 95/98/NT.
`
`Q: Does the unit have TV outputs?
`
`A: No, we don't believe a TV is necessary or desirable to allow enjoyment of high quality audio. The DAS unit has a sharp, electric blue,
`graphical LCD for local display which provides a quick and powerful interface without requiring the TV to be turned on and switched over to
`the AUX VIDEO before any music can be played. In addition we see the networked PC as a more viable solution for advanced control and
`configuration of the DAS unit, given all of the PC's extensive capabilities (keyboard, mouse, screen, modem, etc...).
`
`Q: How long does it take to archive a CD/tape/record to the DAS units internal storage disk?

`8/23/13
`A: The DAS transfers the data as the CD/tape/record is being played so the archiving is completed as soon as the music stops. As an
`alternative, a PC with a CD-ROM drive can be used to encode or "rip" a CD directly onto the DAS units drive across the network. In this
`case the archiving speed is determined by the performance of the PC and the ripping software, but 2-6 times real-time is obtainable.
`
`Q: Does the DAS unit connect to portable MP3 players?
`
`A: One of the big advantages of the networked approach is that any device on the network can see and access the DAS unit. Hence
`every PC on the network can access the unit and a portable MP3 player can access it via that PC. So yes, a portable player can access
`the DAS unit, via the network and a PC. Virtually any USB ports, serial ports, parallel ports, or other periperals on the PC can be used
`with the DAS unit via the network.
`
`Q: Does the DAS unit have multichannel output capability?
`
`A: The initial DAS unit is limited to stereo output either analog or digital. Later models may include multichannel capability.
`
`Q: What types of audio processing does the DAS unit support?
`
`A: The DAS unit contains a high powered programmable 40 bit Digital Signal Processor which can perform many audio processing
`functions. The DAS unit includes a spectral equalizer function to allow fine adjustment of the frequency response (i.e. the bass and treble)
`of the music. Volume adjustment is also provided. The DAS-750 also features 20 bit Crystal A-to-D and D-to-A convertors, for high
`performance analog input and output. Analog output has been measured at 96 dB SNR from 0-22 kHz, which is considerably better than
`what can typically be achieved with a PC or a PC motherboard.
`
`Q: What type of display capability does the unit have?
`
`A: The unit has a built in backlit electric blue graphical LCD which displays artist, album and song information plus various settings for the
`device. Using the QuikSpin™ user dial allows easy access to the music and device settings. The use of a graphical LCD provides superior
`display capability plus the backlit blue design is much more visually appealing than the green alphanumeric text displays used for industrial
`applications.
`
`Q: Can I upgrade the DAS unit to increase storage capacity?
`
`A: Yes, we plan to offer upgrades at reasonable cost to support adding a second drive. Details are still be determined, but this requires
`returning the unit to the factory or to an authorized service representative for the upgrade to be performed.
`
`Q: Can I use the network drive capability to store other (i.e. non-audio) data and programs on the DAS unit?
`
`A: Yes, when configured as a network drive, the DAS unit's internal disk drive can store any data or program file in the same way that a PC
`can. You can put text files, digital images, backup programs or data, etc... on the DAS unit and still access them from the PC. In fact the
`DAS unit can be viewed as a network drive or server with an integrated high performance audio section.
`
`Q: Can I control the DAS unit from a PC?
`
`A: Yes, the DAS unit includes a built-in web server that allows any PC as well as many other types of computers to configure and control
`the DAS-750 with a web browser. Current capabilities include network configuration, CD player type control (stop, start, pause, next,
`previous), and playlist selection. We are currently looking at what other types of control features to support in the future.
`
`Q: Is the DAS unit upgradeable?
`
`A: Yes, the DAS unit includes a built-in upgrade feature that easily allows the user to upgrade the internal software over the Internet. Just
`select the upgrade option from the front panel and with an Internet connection the upgrade is essentially automatic.
`
`Q: Where do I get music for the DAS-750?
`
`A: The DAS-750 plays MP3 files (as well as MP1, MP2 and WAV files) which you can obtain in at least three ways. First you can
`transfer your CD's into MP3 files using a standard PC and any one of a number of "ripper" programs, such as Musicmatch, Audiograbber,
`Audiocatalyst, CD-EX, etc.... Alternately you can download legal MP3 files from online web sites such as MP3.COM, Emusic.com,
`etc.... Finally you can record your music directly into the DAS-750 by hooking it to a phonograph, tape or CD player and using the record
`feature of the device. Just remember to acquire the music legally -- artists and recording companies work hard to bring you the music you
`enjoy and everyone has an obligation to respect their copyrights!
