`Professor Serena Best CEng, MIM
`Professor
`Serena
`Best was
`appointed reader in the Department
`of Materials Science
`in January
`2004 after serving as lecturer since
`2000.
`Professor Best completed a first
`degree in 1986 at Surrey University
`in Materials Technology before
`joining the Professor Bonfield in
`Materials Department at Queen
`Mary and Westfield College to study
`for a PhD in Bioceramics. After
`finishing her PhD in 1990, Professor
`Best joined the Cookson Group to
`work at the Cookson Technology Centre in Yarnton, Oxfordshire.
`The
`Interdisciplinary Research Centre
`(IRC)
`in Biomedical
`Materials was established towards the end of 1991 and Professor
`Best returned to Queen Mary and Westfield College to run the
`the Department. Areas of
`Bioceramics Research Group
`in
`particular
`interest
`in
`the Group
`include
`the synthesis and
`characterisation of novel apatite-based ceramics with the objective
`of systematically studying the biological and mechanical effects of
`the addition of carbonate, fluoride, magnesium, silicon and sodium
`ions into the hydroxyapatite lattice.
`Research in the substituted apatites field has led to five patents
`and patent applications within the Group and the materials are now
