`.
`.
`I 0003]' Automobile accidents are a leading cause of death in the Un.iteC: States,
`killin9 :JV•:!:r 4 0, 000 people. each year. While approximately half of t:hoE e-·kille.:l will

`high rate of speed to a low rate of speed, tisually in a fraction of a second. It ia

`are baEied on the information available to the trauma system regardj.ng the inju:ries
`to the spec.ific occupants involved ( 11 trauma decision-making system 11
`
`) .
`

`
`Summary of J:nvention Paragraph (7) :
`[0005] The .i:njuries received by a specific occupant will depend upon the forces
`generated :i.n the collision as well as the areas of the body that absoibe::t thoiH:!
`forces. ~rhes·e may be affected by several factors including: { 1) the! dyna11ics o:E the
`i:mpac!:_;
`(2)
`the cras'hworthiness of the vehicle;
`(3) the vehicle .safety features;
`(4)
`whether the occupant w~s wearing restraints; (5) the position of the cccupant within
`the ~tdc::lt~ :abin; and ( 6) characteristics of the occupant such as their size ..
`weight, age 3.nd medical condition. Under present trauma decision-msLking systems, the
`only available information regarding these factors is usually that gathered at the
`scene of the accident by emergency responders such as police, .fireman, e11ergency
`medical technicians (EMT's) and paramedics. As a result, delayed or incorrect
`decisi<>nl:l caused by a lack of precise information 'could delay. surgical·· interv~:!n'tior..,
`'""hich ma~r 1:-esult in loss of life or increased injury.
`
`~umma.9~~-.f;nvention Paragraph ( 9) :
`[0007] Another problem with present trauma decision-making systems is. that emc~:rgency
`responde:rs have little advance knowledge of what they may find at cLn accident scene:.
`'!'hey gt:mera.lly do not know how many injured occupants may be present, or what t:ype
`cf injur:le~:~·they can expect. They may not have information suggesting whether
`vehicle~ •:!xt:rication may be required, or whether they will face hazeLrds from
`I:otentTal ~'.~hicle fires, fuel leaks or explo~ions. They may need tc• call for backup
`cr air t:c:-ansport, and may not know what their destination facility will be or 'N'ho

`v.·ill uJ. t:tmately be directing the trauma team. Simple decisions such as what type of
`equipmem·: to carry from the ambulance to the damaged vehicle could be impacted by
`the level of knowledge that an emergency responder has regarding the crash eve::1.t.
`
`§~!)~~_.Invention Paragraph .(10) :
`[OOOB] ~Jother problem with present trauma decision-making systems relates to
`"mechani:3m of injuryn data. The term 11 mecha:nism of injury 11 is used to describe
`informc1.t.lon about the movements of the occupant within the vehicl~.!- ir..cluding the
`forces sustained by the various body parts of the occupant. Given the difficulty in
`~iagn~~Jij}_g blunt trauma injuries, which are often internal, mechanism of injury.
`informat.lon is very important in determining the likely injuries and their severity.
`As a rE~s,Jl t:, mechanism of injury data is often relied upon by emer9enc y :(esponse and
`roedicaJ. professionals to make decisions about pre-transport treatmEmt, facility
`selectio:1., trauma team activation and diagnostic procedures. Under present· trauma
`decision-making systems, mechanism of injury data may only be estimated by emergenc:y
`:responde:rs based on their visual observations about the crashed v~!Licl~_!! and their
`occupant;:!.
`
`~:ummaq~Jf __ Invention Paragraph (11) :
`.
`.
`I 0009] Ana·:: her problem with present trauma decision-making systems is the quality <if
`~ata used to select the destination facility. Most trauma centers havE· Epecific
`c:.dmiss:lon :::riteria that is usually based on the extent of injury p•~rce·ived by the
`E:mergency responders. However, it is very difficult .for an emergency 1·eepon<ter to
`s.iagn_2J?e an internal brain, abdominal or pelvic injury in the field that may not
`e:xhibit external signs. Restrained occupa.:nts may not strike anything ''ithin the
`vehicle during the crash except for safety restraint systems, yet 1:1uf1 e1· severe
`1:nj uri~; a resulting purely from rapid deceleration. As a result, tlu~re iE a
`edgnificant: population of severely injured patients who wJ.ll be in:lti< .. lJ y
