`
`Biscom and Hewlett-Packard Advance Network Scanner/Fax Pact
`Direct Network Scan/Fax Capabilities Enhanced with HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner
`
`Chelmsford, MA - March 3, 1997 - Further extending the cooperation between Hewlett-
`
`Packard and Biscom on the integration of network scanning and faxing technology, the
`
`two companies will offer tightly integrated compatibility between the HP Network
`
`ScanJet 5 scanner and Biscom FAXCOM fax server products running in all major
`
`network operating system environments.
`
`The strategic partnership between the two companies was announced in April of 1996.
`
`In accordance with this partnership, Biscom, the leading provider of enterprise-wide fax
`
`server solutions, will cooperate in technology and marketing efforts with Hewlett-
`
`Packard, which commands the dominant share of the network printing and scanning
`
`markets.
`
`

`
`According to Chris MacKenzie, Biscom's vice president of marketing, "Hewlett-Packard
`
`has increased the integration of the two companies' products by co-developing a direct
`
`link between the Network ScanJet 5 and our FAXCOM fax server products. This will
`
`effectively make the Network ScanJet 5 scanner a client to the fax server, allowing the
`
`Network ScanJet 5 scanner to interact directly with the server for the exchange of
`
`information."
`
`Bank of Boston as a financial institution has a very diversified realm of business
`
`applications. Several of these businesses have benefited from using FAXCOM products.
`
`The fax server has provided us with the ability to store, re-route and manage faxes. We
`
`anticipate interfacing Word documents and cc:Mail documents with hard-copy
`
`documents by using the HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner. The Bank will take advantage of
`
`the savings in time, money and work flow efficiency by using a centralized network
`
`scanner," said Deborah Murphy, senior technical specialist for Bank of Boston.
`
`"This agreement with Biscom signals our company's combined commitment to improve
`
`people's productivity and provide new tools for their changing workplace," said Dennis
`
`Hamann, product marketing manager for Hewlett-Packard Bergamo Hardcopy Division
`
`in Bergamo, Italy.
`
`Fax servers provide an extremely cost-effective method for managing fax traffic in an
`
`organization. Most computer-based faxes originate directly from within a computer
`
`2
`
`

`
`application. With scanning technology, it is possible to provide the benefits of fax server
`
`technology to office workers that also need to send hardcopy documents. Network-based
`
`scanning, like network-based fax servers and network-based printers, offers the additional
`
`economy of providing a shared resource that all users in an office or department can
`
`access. The result is an office solution that is considerably more powerful and versatile
`
`than a traditional fax machine.
`
`Biscom FAXCOM fax servers, for instance, can provide many important capabilities to
`
`fax users, including:
`
`* The ability to handle computer-based documents from networked client
`computers
`
`* Buffer queued faxes for automatic transmission and retransmission
`
`* Perform least-cost routing of faxes over a wide area network of distributed
`offices
`
`* Schedule and perform off-peak transmission of faxes
`
`* Archive copies of stored, and received, faxes
`
`* Receive faxes and route them directly to their destinations
`
`* Provide integration with E-mail and groupware systems
`
`* Support SNMP (including integration with HP OpenView) and alarm
`management
`
`* Provide enterprise-wide integration to all workstations, LANs, minicomputers
`and mainframes
`
`Like the HP ScanJet 4Si scanner, the Network ScanJet 5 scanner provides an office fax
`
`user with the ability to feed a multipage document into the scanner, select a workstation
`
`3
`
`

`
`destination from a list of names, and route the scanned .document to a local desktop.
`
`Users are then able to select a recipient from his or her FAXCOM phonebook, compose a
`
`short message, attach the scanned file, and click "Send" to offload the document for
`
`transmission to the FAXCOM fax server.
`
`Unlike the HP ScanJet 4Si, however, the Network ScanJet 5 scanner offers direct faxing
`
`capability. The Network ScanJet 5 scanner control panel provides a comprehensive user
`
`interface that allows additional capabilities. These capabilities are intended to allow the
`
`user to perform functions, such as sending a fax via a FAXCOM fax server, without the
`
`need to return to the desktop to complete the transmission request. To send a fax, the
`
`user simply places the document into the scanner and keys the fax number into the
`
`control panel or selects a fax number from a predefined list of destinations. The
`
`document is then scanned and sent directly to the FAXCOM fax server for transmission.
`
`fn order to achieve this tight integration, HP and Biscom incorporated functionality
`
`directly into the Network ScanJet 5 scanner that allowed it to send requests to the fax
`
`server. Similarly, transmission status information is returned to the Network ScanJet 5
`
`scanner upon completion or failure, after several retries. The Network ScanJet 5 scanner
`
`is effectively acting as a client to the FAXCOM fax server.
`
`Another major improvement is the Network ScanJet 5 scanner's ability to interface with
`
`multiple network operating systems. The Network ScanJet 5 scanner supports Novell
`
`NetWare, Microsoft NT and IBM LAN Servers. Accordingly, support for a broad range
`
`4
`
`

`
`of Biscom fax server products will be available, including: FAXCOM for NetWare,
`
`FAXCOM for LAN, FAXCOM/WorkGROUP for NetWare, and
`
`FAXCOM/WorkGROUP for NT.
`
`For purchasers of a Network ScanJet 5 scanner who wish to try the network scan/fax
`
`solution, Biscom will provide free ten-user trial copies of its FAXCOM/WorkGROUP for
`
`NetWare and NT users. To obtain a copy, call 1-800-477-2472 ext. 53, outside the
`
`U.S.A., call 1-508-250-1800 ext. 53. Biscom also maintains a web site at:
`
`http://www.biscom.com.
`
`Biscom will be presenting its FAXCOM fax server solutions at a number of forthcoming
`
`industry trade shows, including Networld Interop in Las Vegas (May 6-8), Windows NT
`
`Solutions in San Francisco (August 13-15) and DCI Internet Expo in Boston
`
`(August H -14).
`
`###
`
`Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Chelmsford, MA, Biscom is the leading provider
`
`of enterprise-wide computer/fax solutions and a pioneer in the field. Biscom's FAXCOM
`
`fax server solutions can be integrated with any existing computer system or network in
`
`the enterprise, including personal computer networks, minicomputers, and mainframes.
`
`FAXCOM fax servers are expandable, scaleable, turnkey, production fax servers that can
`
`grow with a business.

`• drag-and-drop pages onto the "OmniPage" icon on the Taskbar of the PaperPort
`for HP desktop software which is also included with the Network ScanJet 5
`scanner. Users simply drag single pages or "stacked" multiple pages to the icon
`that invokes OmniPage Limited Edition. Then, users can identify areas of the
`image to OCR (eliminating the processing of unwanted areas), perform other
`basic OCR functions, and save the resulting text in a wide variety of text formats.
`
`• drag-and-drop pages onto icons of text-based applications available on the
`PaperPort for HP Taskbar, such as MS Word and Excel. In this case, OmniPage
`Limited Edition processes the scanned image in the background and is invisible to
`the user. The resulting text is placed directly in the destination application.
`
`•
`
`take full advantage of the innovative Automatic Workflow capability of the
`Network ScanJet 5 scanner which implements the scanner's "direct scanning to
`application" feature. In this case, users scan a document and route it to a

`
`TELEFORM LEVERAGES HEWLETT-PACKARD'S NEW HP NETWORK SCANJET 5
`SCANNER FOR DISTRIBUTED SCANNING AND FORMS PROCESSING
`
`Departmental Forms Processing with Minimal User Training
`Creates Flexible Data Collection Solution
`
`San Marcos, CA—March 3, 1997— Cardiff Software, Inc., a leading provider of data
`
`collection solutions, today announced that TELEform®, the company's award-winning forms
`
`processing software, is implemented with the new HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner.
`
`TELEform is a scaleable local area network solution that provides high-volume throughput for
`
`automated data entry to leading databases and spreadsheets. With the Network ScanJet 5
`
`scanner, forms can be scanned and routed through the LAN to centralized TELEform Readers. A
`
`true 32-bit Windows 95/Windows NT application, TELEform interprets hand print (ICR),
`
`machine print (OCR), check mark (OMR) and barcode data on forms and sends that information
`
`to a database. Any mismarked or questionable characters are routed to TELEform's Verifier
`
`module for quick correction. TELEform can automatically detect which network scanner has
`
`forwarded a form and with the Network ScanJet 5 scanner's intuitive keypad, TELEform can
`
`even identify the individual who has entered the form.

`
`"Reading data from a form is a key business application for networked scanning," explains
`
`Dennis Hamann, product marketing manager at HP. "TELEform's feature-rich software
`
`leverages the HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner's enterprise-wide document management
`
`capabilities to offer a complete solution for processing paper forms."
`
`Moving Forms Processing out of the Back Office
`
`For years, forms processing has been a back office operation. Batches of order forms, invoices,
`
`market surveys, etc., were collected and re-keyed by the data entry department. TELEform has
`
`automated the data entry function with its ability to read hand print, machine print, and mark
`
`sense data from paper forms. Typically, these forms are collected from around the company—the
`
`mail room, accounting, sales, marketing, shipping and administration—for batch scanning on
`
`centralized, production-level scanners. With Network ScanJet 5 scanners accessible to all
`
`employees in these departments, HP has removed one of the potential bottlenecks associated
`
`with paper to digital data conversion.
`
`"The HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner is an exceptional hardware tool for managing mission
`
`critical data where it occurs—on paper throughout the workplace," said Joseph P. Larson,
`
`president of Cardiff Software. "With its simple user interface and direct connection to the
`
`network, the Network ScanJet 5 scanner creates a new model for cost-effective, paper-based data
`
`collection."
`
`Vertical Markets Around the World
`
`TELEform is used by thousands of companies worldwide in a variety of industries: medical
`
`clinics collect research and process patient information forms; insurance companies have instant
`
`access to accident reports and policy holder claims; and financial service companies collect data
`
`for market reports and forecasts. The software is available internationally, with local-language
`
`versions available in France, the United Kingdom and Germany.
`
`Pricing and Availability
`
`TELEform Version 5 Standard & Elite are now available with suggested retail prices of $1,495
`
`and $4,995 respectively. TELEform requires a 486 PC or higher, 16 MB of RAM, 40 MB
`
`available hard drive space, and Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT.

`
`CASTELLE AND HEWLETT-PACKARD ANNOUNCE
`COMPLETE FAXING AND SCANNING SOLUTION FOR NETWORKS
`
`SANTA CLARA, CA, (March 3, 1997)-- Castelle, Inc. (Nasdaq--NNM:CSTL), a supplier of plug &
`
`play network fax servers, and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE, HWP), the developer of the first true network
`
`scanner, today announced a joint marketing effort to deliver network-ready fax and scanning solutions
`
`that can eliminate the need for stand-alone fax machines.
`
`Bringing the Castelle FaxPress and HP Network ScanJet 5 scanner together allows users to
`
`fax directly from the front panel of the scanner or scan in a document, edit it (if necessary), and
`
`quickly fax it, maintaining a 300 dots per inch quality. The tight integration of the two products
`
`effectively turns the ScanJet 5 scanner into a 15-page per minute (ppm) fax machine which uses the
`
`Castelle FaxPress as its back-end.
`
`Castelle's FaxPress is a self-contained software and hardware network fax solution designed
`
`to give users the ability to send and receive faxes directly from their workstations. Network fax
`
`servers eliminate the need to print a document, take it to a stand-alone fax machine, and wait for its
`
`transmission. In addition, a fax server can sort incoming faxes and route them electronically and
`
`confidentially directly to the electronic mailboxes of the intended recipients.
`
`The Hewlett-Packard Network ScanJet 5 scanner, which attaches directly to Ethernet or
`
`Token Ring LANs, was developed to provide an easy way to scan documents/images into files and
`
`share them with multiple users on the network. The Network ScanJet 5 scanner allows users to
`
`quickly scan documents and then distribute to users through an intuitive control panel. The combined
`
`Castelle/HP product offering changes the usage model for a network user sending paper faxes. The
`
`integration at a software and network level, along with the addition of a six line display and alpha-
`
`numeric keypad allows the network user three scan/fax options:
`
`1. Go to the scanner, enter a phone number, and "send" the fax
`2. Go to the scanner, select a phone number from a predefined fax destination list, and "send" the
`fax
`3. Scan a document return to the desktop and utilize the Castelle user interface to send or attach the
`paper document to an electronic document for transmission.

`
`

`
`CASTELLE/HEWLETT-PACKARD (cid:9)
`
`Page 2
`
`The ScanJet/FaxPress combination becomes a "virtual" 15 ppm network fax machine.
`
`By joining these two technologies, the need for a stand-alone fax machine is reduced. In
`
`addition, Castelle and HP have solved many of the problems associated with faxing, including
`
`relatively low quality transmissions, low data transmission rates, and the inability to send and receive
`
`faxes simultaneously.
`
`"The combination of the Network ScanJet 5 scanner and the Castelle FaxPress network fax
`
`solution provides users the ability to take their paper-based information into the digital realm. The
`
`increased speed and higher quality of this combined network solution, as well as the ability to edit
`
`scanned material before sending, make stand-alone fax machines practically obsolete. The Network
`
`ScanJet 5 scanner is a key component to HP's Digital Workplace strategy, which is aimed to provide the
`
`seamless flow of information in digital and paper form," said Dennis Hamann, product marketing
`
`manager for Hewlett-Packard's Bergamo Hardcopy Division in Bergamo, Italy.
`
`The Hewlett-Packard/Castelle relationship invites network administrators to evaluate both
`
`products for 30 days. The products are designed for Windows NT or Novell NetWare Ethernet/ Token
`
`Ring environments. Users can obtain both units from Castelle which can be reached at 800-289-7555 or
`
`408-496-0474. Hewlett-Packard and Castelle will continue to develop flexible products that will
`
`enhance network environments.

`easily add support for the Network ScanJet 5 scanner and imaging capabilities to new and
