`
`Remote control unit for the wireless control of different devices
`
`The invention relates to a remote control unit, in particular for
`
`controlling electronic devices in the market segment consumer
`
`electronics, which is able to control each device of a pre-determined
`
`group of known devices without any need for complicated adjusting or
`
`resetting operations of the remote control unit to be compliant with the
`
`device that is to be controlled. The remote control unit can, therefore,
`
`be configured easily as a compatible remote control unit that is
`
`independent of the device model and the manufacturer of the device.
`
`Known remote control units are, due to the pre-determined remote control
`
`code by circuit-type, for the most part uniquely matched to a certain
`
`device manufacturer. For the user, this means, with any purchase of a new
`
`device, said user must also purchase a new special remote control unit
`
`and keep the same handy, ready to use in the vicinity of the device, which
`
`is, in the case of consumer electronics, typically the immediate living
`
`space of the user. Each newly acquired remote control unit, furthermore
`
`requires a familiarization phase, even if

`
`it is purchased for a second device from a device class that the user
`
`is already familiar with. The user must newly memorize, usually only
`
`design-related special control features of operation and permanently
`
`distinguish the same from the features of previously obtained remote
`
`control units. Even principally identical functions such as, for
`
`example, station selection on receiving devices or time programming of
`
`time-controlled functions must be handled quite differently from the
`
`use of known remote control units. This parallel use of a variety of
`
`different remote control units is confusing even to the technically
`
`gifted user and results necessarily in more frequent operating errors
`
`due to faulty remote control actuation than should be reasonably
`
`expected.
`
`
`
`It is the object of the present invention to create a remote control
`
`unit by which it is possible to remotely control an entire group of known
`
`devices that are to be defined independently of their respective device
`
`manufacturer.
`
`
`
`This object is achieved by means of the invention as captioned in Claim
`
`1. Advantageous improvements are set forth in the dependent claims. The
`
`invention is especially advantageously suited for use in connection
`
`with all remote control units that are intended to implement a uniform
`
`remote control operation of devices from the same device class,
`
`independently of the respective device manufacturer or device model.

`Fig.3

`
`Fig. l shows the functional comprehensive wiring diagram, in
`
`principle, of the remote control unit according to the invention. A
`
`control system 1, which is embodied as a microprocessor system,
`
`converts the operation of the actuation elements 2, as implemented by
`
`the user, to the corresponding technical circuit-specific or
`
`program-specific commands for the control code generator 3. Said
`
`control code generator then generates remote control signals that are
`
`sent by means of an infrared transmitting diode 4 to the device that
`
`is to be controlled, and that trigger therein that function that was
`
`allocated to the actuation element on the remote control unit, which
`
`is actuated by the user. A special aspect of the control code generator
`
`is the property thereof of being able to generate, in response to each
`
`command by the control system, different remote control signals that
`
`are capable of triggering relative to different devices of a
`
`pre-determined device group the respective function that is allocated
`
`to the actuated remote control push button.
`
`The control code generator 3 receives the information as to what
`
`special code specification must be used, respectively, for generating
`
`a remote control signal from the code selection circuit 5.

`
`The same selects from the memory table 6, which contains all
`
`possible control signals organized by the pre-determined devices,
`
`only one column, respectively, with the control signals for a
`
`certain device. A code detection circuit 7, which controls the code
`
`selection circuit, detects and then specifies which device of the
`
`pre-determined group must be addressed, respectively, and,
`
`consequently, which column of the code memory table must be
`
`utilized for generating the remote control signals.
`
`The code detection circuit 7 only supplies information that
`
`modifies a code selection via the circuit parts 5 and 6 when, based
`
`on a special push button actuation according to Claims 6, 7 and
`
`8, a phase of start-up of operation of the remote control unit with
`
`a special device that is to be controlled or with another device
`
`than previously controlled must be assumed. During a start-up of
`
`operation of this kind, the code detection circuit 7 causes,
`
`following actuation of an actuating element, different stored
`
`codes to be sequentially tried out; meaning, the device that is
`
`to be controlled is offered control signals of different devices
`
`from the pre-determined group. This process is initially started
`
`with a randomly selected signal from all possible control signals,
`
`then later, when other push buttons are actuated, the same is
`
`repeated, if necessary, in such a way that only control signals
`
`from a subset of possible signals are tried out in a targeted
`
`manner. The start-up of operation ends automatically, when the
`
`subset of control codes that are to be tried out contains only a
`
`single code; meaning, the remote control code of the device that
`
`is to be controlled has been unequivocally and completely
`
`identified from among the quantity of the stored codes.
`
`Fig. 2 shows the logic flow diagram of the code detection process
`
`during the start-up phase of operation. When the code of the device
`
`that is to be controlled, respectively, has been identified, the
`
`functioning of the code detection circuit ends, and with that the
`
`start-up phase of operation. Subsequent user inputs are then
`
`automatically only converted to control signals of the detected
`
`code.

`
`
`
`Using an actuation element, which is protected against inadvertent
`
`actuation, the user can knowingly and intentionally retrigger the
`
`described start-up phase of operation and the automatic transition to
`
`other, then-valid remote control codes.
`
`Fig. 3 shows an example of a schematized excerpt from a code memory table.
`
`Each line specifies the control signals of all pre-determined devices
`
`of a device class for a certain function. Each column contains the set
`
`of control signals that is valid for a certain device that is to be
`
`controlled by way of a suitable description that is usable for the control
`
`code generator. If, for example, as in Fig. 3, a start-up phase of
`
`operation is commenced by actuation of the push button "PLAY," the signals
`
`s(PLAY), g(PLAY), h(PLAY), etc. are automatically and sequentially
`
`generated and sent by means of the infrared transmission diode 4 to the
`
`device that is to be controlled. If the sequence of control attempts,
`
`which ranges in the present example to f(PLAY), that is to be continued
`
`is confirmed and discontinued by the user after h(PLAY), the code
`
`detection circuit registers the signal h(PLAY) as a remote control signal
`
`that triggers the function "PLAY" on the device that is to be controlled.
`
`Afterwards, the code detection circuit checks the subsequent table
`
`entries within the line of all PLAY signals and, as a precautionary
`
`measure, also the complete remainder of the table for any ambiguities
`
`of the control signal h(PLAY) for other devices than only device h and for
`
`other functions of other devices. In the example in Fig. 3, the signal
`
`h(PLAY) coincides within a preset error and/or distinction limit with the
`
`signals z(PLAY) and f(PLAY) of the devices of different models or produced
`
`by a different manufacturer, which are represented presently designated
`
`as z and f devices.
`
`After the first try-out step, with the next actuation, presently, for
`
`example, the push button "STOP," reliance is only placed on control
`
`signals h(STOP), z(STOP) and f(STOP) of the subset of the three devices
`
`h, z and f among the control signals of which the ambiguity of h(PLAY)
`
`was detected in the context of the first attempt.

`
`By way of a try-out, h(STOP), z(STOP) und f(STOP) are then sent to the device that
`
`is to be controlled. If the user confirms and discontinues said second
`
`try-out process after the transmission of z(STOP), the function of code
`
`detection circuit 7 ends, because the confirmed control signal z(ST0P) no longer
`
`matches any other of the control signals as described in the table. The device
`
`that is to be controlled is thus considered uniquely identified relative to "z."
`
`Subsequently, until the user intentionally initiates a start-up phase of
`
`operation by means of actuating the remote control push buttons, or until such
`
`a phase is automatically re-initiated, only the control signals as specified
`
`in the column in Fig. 3 are used for device z.
