`
`Detailed Description of the Device
`
`0001
`
`Industrial Field of Application
`
`The present device pertains to portable telephones having excellent operability.
`
`0002
`
`Prior Art
`
`FIG. 10 shows the constitution of an example of a portable telephone of the prior art. A speaker 2 is
`
`disposed on the upper front surface and a microphone l is disposed on the lower front surface thereof. A
`
`variety of keys 3 which are necessary for calling operations are disposed above the microphone 1. A liq-
`
`uid crystal display part 4 is disposed between the keys 3 and the speaker 2. When the keys 3 are operated
`
`to perform a calling operation to a specific telephone number, radio waves are sent by an antenna 5, these
`
`radio waves are received at the antenna of the nearest exchange, and the other party is rung. When the
`
`person being called answers, a telephone circuit is connected and telephone communications are facili-
`
`tated thereby.
`
`0003
`
`Conversely, in idle mode, when an incoming call signal through the antenna 5 is detected, a ring tone
`
`is generated by the speaker 2. At this time, when the desired key 3 is operated, a telephone circuit is con-
`
`nected and telephone communications facilitated thereby.
`
`0004
`
`Called party telephone numbers entered by the user and a variety of messages relating to operations
`
`and the like are displayed by the liquid crystal display part 4.
`
`0005
`
`Problems the Device Is Intended to Resolve
`
`Devices of the prior art such as this cannot be provided with very large display parts 4 because the
`
`keys 3 and the display part 4 are disposed between the microphone l and the speaker 2. Although the
`
`space for the display part 4 can be increased by reducing the space for the keys 3, the large number of
`
`keys 3 becomes concentrated in a small surface area and thus operability deteriorates.
`
`0006
`
`The present device has been devised in view of the aforesaid circumstances and permits the display
`of a large amount of information at a single time without adversely affecting operability.

`
`Means of Solving the Problems
`
`The portable telephone of the present device is provided with a speaker disposed at the top, a micro-
`
`phone disposed at the bottom, and a combined display/touch panel disposed between the speaker and the
`
`microphone; the keys which are necessary for calling operations are displayed on the combined dis-
`
`play/touch panel.
`
`40008
`
`Operation
`
`The portable telephone configured as described above is provided with a combined display/touch
`
`panel between the speaker and microphone and the keys which are necessary for calling operations are
`
`displayed thereupon. Therefore, the size of the keys can be made somewhat large along with being able to
`
`display predetermined information at one time.
`
`0009
`
`Embodiment
`
`FIG. 1 shows the constitution of an embodiment of the portable telephone of the present device. A
`
`speaker 12 is provided in the top part of the front surface of the portable telephone of this embodiment
`
`and a microphone 11 is provided at the bottom thereof. A combined display/touch panel 13 is disposed
`
`' between the microphone 11 and the speaker 12. A power switch 14 is disposed on the right side surface of
`the portable telephone and an antenna 15 is provided at the upper surface.
`
`0010
`
`.
`
`FIG. 2 is a block diagram illustrating the internal electrical configuration of the embodiment shown
`
`in FIG. 1. The antenna 15 is connected to the high-frequency block 22. A demodulation/modulation
`
`equivalent circuit 23, channel codec circuit 24, audio codec circuit 25, and audio circuit 26 are sequential-
`
`ly connected to the high-frequency block 22. The microphone 11 and speaker 12 are connected to the au-
`dio circuit 26. The combined display/touch panel 13 is controlled by a local CPU 27. A CPU 29 controls
`
`overall operations. A memory 28 stores the necessary data as needed. A battery manager 30 responds to
`
`the operation of the power switch 14 and supplies the required power to each part of the device from an
`
`internal battery.
`
`0011
`
`FIGS. 3 and 4 show the constitution of the combined display/touch panel 13. As shown in the cross-
`
`sectional constitution in FIG. 4, an LCD (liquid crystal display part) 52 is provided on a substrate 51.
`
`Above this, a transparent electrode 41 is disposed on the upper surface of a glass 53. A thin glass 55
`
`which is provided with a transparent electrode 42 is disposed above the glass 53 so as to oppose the trans-
`
`parent electrode 41 with dot spacers 54 disposed therebetween. The upper surface of the thin glass 55 is
`coated with a protective film 56. Although the transparent electrodes 41 and 42 are normally separated
`

`
`
`JP04-116449 U (7)
`
`from one another, when a finger or the like is used to press down the thin glass 55 from above via the pro-
`
`tective film 56 as illustrated in FIG. 4, the thin glass 55 is elastically deformed and the transparent elec-
`
`trode 42 makes contact with the transparent electrode 41 below it. As illustrated in FIG. 3, a plurality of
`
`lines of transparent electrodes 41 and 42 is disposed in the horizontal and vertical directions. Thus, ma-
`
`trix-type detection is facilitated by detecting if the position where contact is made contacts one of these
`
`transparent electrodes. The local CPU 27 performs this detection operation.
`
`0012
`
`On the other hand, when the LCD 52 performs the required display, the LCD 52 display can be
`b
`viewed from above because the transparent electrodes 41 and 42, the thin glass 55, and the protective film
`
`56 are all transparent. Therefore, the user can press the desired locations corresponding to the LCD 52
`
`display.
`
`0013
`
`The CPU 29 sets up idle mode as the initial state when the power switch 14 is turned on and the re-
`
`quired power is supplied to each part by the battery manager 30. When this idle mode is set, the local
`CPU 27 causes the combined display/touch panel 13 to display as shown, for example, in FIG. 5. At this
`time, the word IDLE is displayed at the top to indicate idle mode and the mode (MODE) key 61 is dis-
`
`played at the lower right.
`
`0014
`
`When an incoming call signal arrives in this [idle] state, the incoming call signal is received by the
`
`high—frequency block 22 and is demodulated by the demodulation/modulation equivalent circuit 23. The
`demodulation output is provided to the channel codec circuit 24 and is decoded therein. When the CPU 29
`determines that this decoded data is an incoming call signal for this device, it controls the audio codec
`
`circuit 25 and generates a ring tone. This ring tone is outputted from the speaker 12 via the audio circuit
`26. At this time also, the local CPU 27 controls the combined display/touch panel 13 and causes it to dis-
`
`play as illustrated in FIG. 6. In this example, the word CALL flashes to indicate that there is a call. More-
`over, a receive key 62 and an end key 63 are displayed to the left of the mode key 61.
`
`001 5
`
`The user presses the receive key 62 when he becomes aware that there is a call because of the ring
`tone from the speaker 12 or the flashing word CALL. The local CPU 27 outputs a detection signal to the
`CPU 29 when it detects this pressing of the receive key 62. When the CPU 29 detects the fact that the re-
`ceive key 62 has been pressed, it controls the channel codec circuit 24 and generates that detection signal.
`This detection signal is modulated by the demodulation/modulation equivalent circuit 23 and is transmit-
`ted from the high-frequency block 22 through the antenna 15. The exchange establishes a telephone cir-
`
`cuit when this detection signal is received.

`
`I 0016
`
`Thereafter, the radio waves which are received at the high-frequency block 22 via the antenna 15 are
`demodulated by the demodulation/modulation equivalent circuit 23 and are decoded by the channel codec
`circuit 24. The audio data which is outputted by the channel codec circuit 24 is inputted into the audio
`codec circuit 25 and decoded therein. The audio data outputted by the audio codec circuit 25 is inputted
`
`into the audio circuit 26 and is outputted from the speaker 12 after D/A conversion.
`
`0017
`
`Meanwhile the audio signals inputted from the microphone 11 are inputted into the audio codec cir-
`cuit 25 after A/D conversion by the audio circuit 26, and are encoded therein. This audio data is inputted
`into the demodulation/modulation equivalent circuit 23 via the codec circuit 24 and is modulated therein.
`This modulated signal is provided to the high-frequency block 22 and is outputted from the antenna 15 as
`
`an RF signal.
`
`001 8
`
`Normal telephone communications are performed in this way.
`
`0019
`
`When telephone communication ends, the user presses the end key 63. When pressing of the end key
`63 is detected, the local CPU 27 outputs a detection signal to the CPU 29. The CPU 29 outputs an end key
`63 detection signal using the same operations as when sending the detection signal of the receive key 62.
`When the exchange receives this detection signal, it releases the telephone circuit.
`
`0020
`
`When the end key 63 detection signal is inputted, the CPU 29 changes the mode from receive mode
`to idle mode. In so doing, the local CPU 27 automatically changes the display of the combined dis-
`play/touch panel l3 from the state illustrated in FIG. 6 back to the state illustrated in FIG. 5.
`
`002 1
`
`When the mode key 61 is pressed in idle mode, the local CPU 27 outputs that detection signal to the
`CPU 29. At this time, the CPU 29 changes the mode from idle mode to dial mode. When set to dial mode,
`the local CPU 27 changes the display of the combined display/touch panel as illustrated in FIG. 7. In this
`dial mode, a variety of keys which are needed to perform calling operations are displayed on the com-
`bined display/touch panel 13. The numbers corresponding to the keys which are pressed are displayed in
`the topmost blank area. After operating the desired number keys and inputting the desired telephone num-
`ber, the operation of calling the party of that number is started by pressing the SEND key. The telephone
`conversation can be ended by pressing the END key.

`
`0022
`
`The CPU 29 changes the mode to dial list mode when the mode key 61 is pressed in dial mode. In
`dial list mode, the local CPU 27 causes the combined display/touch panel 13 to display as shown in FIG.
`8. Specifically, the local CPU 27 reads out at this time the dial list which has already been stored in the
`memory 28 and displays it on the combined display/touch panel 13. This dial list is displayed as a list in
`which names and telephone numbers are associated. The list which is displayed can be scrolled up or
`down by using the scroll keys, indicated as upward or downward facing triangular icons in FIG. 8.
`
`0023
`
`Dial lists are created as follows. Specifically, by putting [the portable telephone] into dial mode as
`shown in FIG. 7 and pressing the alphabet (ALPH) key, the alphabet is displayed in the region in which
`numbers are displayed in FIG. 7. The remainder of the alphabet which is not displayed here can be dis-
`played by pressing the ALPHA key once again. When the desired alphabet key is pressed, the alphabetic
`letter corresponding to the operation is displayed in the topmost blank area. After entering the alphabetic
`letters of the desired name in this way, the alphabetic name which has been inputted at this time is stored
`in the memory 28 by pressing the store (STORE) key. The number (NUMBER) key is pressed to enter the
`telephone number of the individual having that name. Having done so, the alphabetic display changes to a
`numerical display as illustrated in FIG. 7. By using these numerical keys, the numbers corresponding to
`the operation of the numerical keys are displayed in the topmost blank area. When a number is entered in
`
`error, it can be deleted by pressing the clear (CLEAR) key.
`
`0024
`
`After completing the entry of the desired telephone number in this way, the telephone number which
`has been inputted is stored in the memory 28 by pressing the store key. In this way, a dial list can be
`created.
`
`0025
`
`Furthermore, when the name or telephone number is pressed in this dial list mode, the mode auto-
`matically changes to dial mode and the telephone number of the party to be called which has been pressed
`will be displayed in the topmost blank area. Then, when the SEND key is pressed, a calling operation to
`the party being called is performed.
`'
`
`0026
`
`When the mode key 61 is used in dial list mode, the CPU 29 changes the mode to status and message
`mode. At this time, the local CPU 27 changes the display of the combined display/touch panel 13 to dis-
`play as illustrated in FIG. 9. A variety of information such as the remaining internal battery charge, signal
`reception strength, operator (exchange which this portable telephone is accessing), zone (region in which
`this portable telephone is located), etc. is displayed in this status and message mode. Moreover, messages
`and other information received via the exchange are displayed herein.

`
`0027
`
`[The portable telephone] transitions to idle mode, as illustrated in FIG. 5, when the mode key 61 is
`
`used in this status and message mode.
`
`0028
`
`Also, of course [the portable telephone] transitions automatically to receive mode, as illustrated in
`FIG. 6, when it detects an incoming call signal in idle mode, as well as in dial mode, dial list mode, or
`
`status and message mode.
`
`0029
`
`Furthermore, in any of the above modes, if the user makes an operating error [the portable telephone]
`automatically transitions to error message mode in which an error message is displayed which corres-
`ponds to the error as needed. The mode key 61 can be used to return to the original mode from error mes-
`
`sage mode.
`
`0030
`
`As described above, the size of the operating keys can be maintained as a somewhat larger size with-
`out adversely impacting operability because the keys which are necessary to perform calling operations
`are displayed on the combined display/touch panel 13, and the key display can be changed as needed so
`that other information is displayed. Also, at the same time, a large amount of information can be dis-
`played at one time because the display of these keys can be changed and other information displayed the-
`reby.
`
`0031
`
`Effect of the Device
`
`The portable telephone of the present device as described above can display the keys in a somewhat
`larger size and prevent any deterioration of operability because the keys which are necessary for calling
`operations are displayed on a combined display/touch panel. Moreover, a large amount of information can
`be displayed at one time because the key display can be changed and other information displayed therein.
`Therefore, there is no deterioration of operability and a large amount of information can be displayed at
`one time and it is possible to miniaturize [a portable telephone] over that of the prior art which is conve-
`
`nient in terms of portability.
