`
`Detailed Description of the Invention
`3.
`Object of the Invention
`Field of Industrial Application
`
`The present invention pertains to improving communication terminal devices such as an
`e-mail device or a facsimile device or a combined telephone/terminal device.
`
`
`Prior Art
`
`In recent years, various types of communication terminal devices have been developed in
`conjunction with progress in communication networks and the diversification of communication
`configurations. One such device has a function that uses multitask processing to execute in
`parallel a processing action that that requires an operator operation, such as telephonic
`conversation or input/output of information, and a processing action that does not require an
`operator operation, such as a data communication action. For example, in the case of an e-mail
`device, while the operator is performing the task of inputting character information to create a
`mail message, a mail message that has already been created is sent or received. Also, in the case
`of a combined telephone/terminal device, data is sent/received via another communication line
`while the operator is talking. If this sort of device is used, data communication, etc. is performed
`in parallel while the operator is doing some sort of task related to communication by a manual
`operation, so a plurality of processes can be executed with good efficiency.
`
`However, when this sort of conventional device executes data communication in parallel
`with a processing task involving manual operation by the operator such as creating a mail
`message or a telephonic conversation, in order to not interfere with the operator's operation, data
`communication is performed without the device notifying the operator of the status thereof.
`Therefore, the operator is completely uninformed about the fact that data communication is being
`performed until the input/output operation or the telephonic conversation ends, and difficulties
`may arise. For example, if a communication abnormality occurs in the course of data
`communication, the operator is not able to deal with this immediately, and if received data is
`available, the operator is not aware of this.
`
`Problems the Invention Is to Solve
`
`When the sort of conventional device described above performs a processing action that
`does not require an operator action, such as data communication, in parallel while executing a
`processing action that requires an operator action, such as input/output of information or a
`telephonic conversation, there is a problem in that the operator is completely uninformed of the
`status of the processing action that does not require an operator operation, so the present
`invention focused on this point, and was devised to provide a communication terminal device
`that can notify the operator of the status of a processing action being executed in parallel even
`during an operator operation, and that can enable performing the optimum processing as
`required, even for a processing action that does not require an operation, while an operation for
`an optional processing action is being carried out.

`
`
`Constitution of the Invention
`Means for Solving the Problems
`
`The present invention is a communication terminal device, as shown in FIG. 1, that is
`capable of executing in parallel a first processing action that requires an operator operation and a
`second processing action that does not require an operator operation, wherein the device is
`equipped with an information display means A, and with a display control means B; using the
`information control means B, the execution status of the above-mentioned second processing
`action is displayed at the above-mentioned information display means A at least while the above-
`mentioned first processing action is being executed.
`
`Operation
`
`As a result, even while the operator is performing an operation for an optional processing
`action, the operator can know the execution status of a second processing action that does not
`require an operation that is being performed in parallel with the first processing action, and so it
`becomes possible to immediately perform the optimum processing as required according to the
`execution status of the second processing action.
`
`Embodiment
`
`FIG. 2 shows the constitution of an e-mail device, equipped with a telephone function,
`that is a communication terminal device in one embodiment of the present invention. In this
`device, a telephone circuit 3, equipped with a handset 4, and a control circuit 5 are connected to a
`subscriber line 1 via a line interface 2. A drawing input device 6 and a display 7 constituting a
`digitizer 9 and a storage device 8, comprising a magnetic disk device, for example, are connected
`to the control circuit 5. Here, the above-mentioned subscriber line 1 is connected to a digital
`network such as ISDN, so in the case of an ISDN basic interface, two B channels (64 kbps) used
`mainly as a voice call line and one D channel (16 kbps) used mainly for network control signal
`transmission and data communication are multiplexed on the subscriber line 1.
`
`Incidentally, the control circuit 5 has a microcomputer as the main control unit, and
`provided as control functions therefor are a call control means 51 for controlling telephonic
`conversation actions that use the above-mentioned handset 4 and the telephone circuit 3, a
`drawing input/output control means 52 for controlling drawing information by the drawing input
`device 6 and the display 7, i.e. controlling input/output of mail messages, a data communication
`control means 53 for controlling the sending/receiving of mail messages, and a communication
`status display control means 54. When sending/receiving a mail message is performed in parallel
`with a telephonic conversation or creating a mail message, the communication status display
`control means 54 identifies the status of the sending/receiving action for the mail message and
`displays it at a predetermined region of the above-mentioned display 7.
`
`Next, the actions of a device constituted as described above shall be described according
`to the control procedure for the control circuit 5. The control circuit 5, in standby status, sets and
`monitors a call mode, drawing input mode, other modes, and a data communication mode
`respectively in step 3a to step 3d as shown in FIG. 3. Furthermore, the above-mentioned other
`modes include a mode for displaying a received mail message, an erase mode, etc.
`
`In this status, now, if the subscriber designates the drawing input mode in order to create
`a mail message, the control circuit 5 detects this designation in step 3b and then shifts to drawing
`input control. That is, first, as shown in FIG. 4, in step 4a, coordinate information on characters
`and graphics drawn in the drawing input region of the digitizer 9 is input, fixed length by fixed
`
`
`
`3
`
`Kyocera PX 1020_9
`
`

`

`
`
`length, via a buffer memory that is not shown in the drawing, and in step 4b this coordinate
`information is stored in the storage circuit 8, and in step 4c is displayed at a position on the
`display 7 corresponding to the above-mentioned inputted coordinate position, as shown in FIG. 5
`for example. Therefore, the subscriber can create a mail message while seeing the drawing
`information displayed at the display 7.
`
`Now, each time the input of a fixed-length amount of coordinate information ends, in step
`4d the control circuit 5 decides whether or not data communication is underway, i.e. determines
`whether or not automatic sending/receiving of a mail message is being performed in parallel with
`the above-mentioned drawing input action. Then, if data communication is not being performed,
`the control circuit shifts to step 4e, where it is determined whether or not drawing input mode has
`ended. If drawing input has ended, in step 4g the drawing end processing is performed, and then
`the control circuit returns to standby status. Alternatively, if drawing input mode is underway, in
`step 4f the data communication mode is monitored, and then the control circuit returns to
`controlling the input of coordinate information in step 4a, after which the above control is
`repeated.
`
`On the other hand, if a data call comes in while this mail message is being created, the
`control circuit 5 detects this call arrival in step 4f and shifts to data communication control.
`Then, while performing data communication control, idle time is utilized to execute the above-
`mentioned drawing input control, and input of coordinate information and display control are
`performed. Also, in this case it is determined that communication is underway in step 4d, so the
`control circuit 5 shifts to step 4h and here determines the current communication status, and in
`step 4i displays this communication status at the display 7 of the digitizer 9. For example, if mail
`is now being received, the message "mail being received," as shown in FIG. 5, is displayed at a
`predetermined region of the display 7 that was set in advance. Therefore, while the subscriber is
`performing drawing input, the subscriber can know that mail is being received due to the above-
`mentioned communication status message. Also, when displaying the communication status, in
`step 4j the control circuit 5 determines if the drawing input has ended; if drawing input is
`underway, the control circuit shifts to data communication control without change, and if
`drawing input has ended, in step 4k drawing input end processing is executed, and then the
`control circuit shifts to data communication control.
`
`Given this sort of embodiment, even if data communication control is performed while
`the subscriber is doing a drawing input operation, the status of the data communication is
`displayed at a specific region of the display 7, so the subscriber can know the status of the data
`communication while performing drawing input. Therefore, for example, if a communication
`abnormality occurs during data communication, it is possible to immediately perform the
`optimum processing with respect to this communication abnormality. Also, it is possible to
`reliably notify the subscriber that a mail message has been received, so it can be confirmed
`immediately without letting an important received mail message sit for a long time.
`
`Furthermore, the present invention is not limited to the above-mentioned embodiment.
`For example, in the above-mentioned embodiment the communication status is displayed at a
`partial region of the digitizer, but it is also possible to provide a display for displaying the
`communication status in a dedicated manner, and in addition, this constitution may be a liquid
`crystal display or light-emitting diodes, etc. for displaying messages. Also, the above-mentioned
`embodiment was described using an example of an e-mail device with a telephone function, but
`it may also be applied to a telephone or a facsimile device with a data communication function.
`By doing so, for example, even in a case in which data communication is performed using a
`
`
`
`4
`
`Kyocera PX 1020_10
`
`

`

`
`
`personal computer during a telephonic conversation, that communication status can be displayed
`to notify the speaker, and even in a case in which facsimile data is received while sending a
`facsimile or while reading an original document to be sent, that reception status can be displayed
`to notify the operator. Also, the type of the communication terminal device and the constitution
`of the information display means, and the control procedure and control contents of the action
`status display control means, and so forth can be modified in various ways without departing
`from the gist of the present invention.
`
`Effect of the Invention
`
`As described in detail above, given a communication terminal device that is capable of
`executing in parallel a first processing action that requires an operator operation and a second
`processing action that does not require an operator operation, the present invention provides a
`communication terminal device that is equipped with an information display means and a display
`control means; using this display control means, the execution status of the above-mentioned
`second processing action is displayed at the above-mentioned information display means at least
`while the above-mentioned first processing action is being executed, so even during an operator
`operation the operator can be notified of the status of processing actions executed in parallel, so
`it becomes possible to perform the optimum processing as needed, even for a processing action
`that does not require an operation, while carrying out an operation for an optional processing
`action.
