`THIRD REVISED ACCELERATED EXAMINATION SUPPORT DOCUMENT
`
`Commissioner for Patents
`P.O. Box 1450
`Alexandria, VA 22323-1450
`
`Dear Sir:
`
`This Third Revised Accelerated Examination Support Document
`
`is provided m
`
`conjunction with the Response to the January 13,2009 Office Action filed herewith.
`
`There are twenty (20) claims in the present application. Claims 1, 8 and 16 are
`
`independent. Claims 1, 8, 16, 19 and 20 are amended in the Response. The amendment to
`
`independent Claims 1, 8 and 16 are addressed below.
`
`It is believed that the amendments to
`
`Claims 19 and 20 do not need to be addressed in this Examination Support Document. Claims
`
`19 and 20 are amended to recite a computing system instead of a reader. The remainder of the
`
`claims is substantially unchanged. Claims 19 and 20 were addressed in the prior Accelerated
`
`Examination Support Documents.
`
`Claims 15, 17 and 18 are canceled in the Response. Claims 21-23 are new. Claim 21
`
`recites that "the computer comprises substantially all of the components of a fully functional
`
`general purpose computer excluding means for a user to interact with the computer." This
`
`element was included in originally-filed Claim 8 which was addressed in the prior versions of the
`
`Examination Support Document. Claim 23 recites that "the reader further comprises a housing

`

`

`connected to the input device and the output device, wherein the housing comprises the
`
`connector configured to connect to the computer." These elements were included in originally-
`
`filed Claims 1, 4 and 8 and, therefore, were addressed in the prior versions of the Examination
`
`Support Document. Claim 22 recites that "the computing system is a voice recorder and wherein
`
`the input device comprises at least one microphone and the output device comprises at least one
`
`speaker." This claim is addressed below.

`
`DETAILED EXPLANATION OF PATENTABILITY
`
`1.
`
`Jenkins
`
`US 6,029,183
`
`This patent ("Jenkins") is directed to a transferable mobile core computer (1) that can be
`
`used with compatible enclosures (2). The core computer has a housing that houses substantially
`
`all of the components of a fully functional computer, including a microprocessor.
`
`(See Claim 1;
`
`col. 5, lines 60-65.)

`
`

`

`The core computer is inserted into an enclosure as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The enclosure
`
`has a connector (4) for connecting the enclosure with the connector (3) of the core computer.
`
`The connector between the computer and the enclosure is "customized" and, therefore, prevent
`
`the computer from being used unless it is used with a specific enclosure.
`
`(See col. 8, lines 25(cid:173)
`
`30.) In other words, a core unit of a user is not interchangeable with a core unit of another user;
`
`each is a customized design. In addition, the enclosure, not the core computer, is powered. (See
`
`col. 8, lines 58-60.)
`
`After the computer is inserted into the enclosure, the enclosure must then be connected to
`
`a separate device or structure (6) that has input/output means for allowing a user to interact with
`
`the computer. (See e.g., Fig. 7.) The means for connecting to such a device are peripheral ports
`
`(5). The device may include a display. (See e.g., col. 10, lines 8-11.) The enclosure is always
`
`connected either directly or indirectly to a structure such as the console of a car, test equipment,
`
`house electrical system, other computers, etc. (See col. 7, lines 24-30.)
`
`Claim 1 recites that the reader's housing is an input and an output device and that the
`
`reader is configured to provide input to and output from a portable computer when the portable
`
`computer and reader are connected. Such an input and output device may include a keyboard
`
`and display.
`
`In the present invention, a user simply inserts the handheld portable computer into
`
`the input/output device and then is automatically able to interact directly with the computer, for
`
`example, by using the computer's programs.
`
`Jenkins does not disclose or suggest that the computer reader's housing is an input and
`
`output device that facilitates direct user interaction with the portable computer.
`
`In Jenkins's
`
`device, the enclosure is a housing that must be connected to another piece of equipment or
`
`input/output device to allow a user to interact directly with the contents of the portable computer.

`

`Jenkins provides that the enclosure must always be connected either directly or indirectly to a
`
`structure such as the console of a car, test equipment, house electrical system, other computers,
`
`etc. for a user to interact with the computer. (See col. 7, lines 24-30.) Such a device or structure
`
`is shown in Jenkins's Fig. 7, which shows the portable computer inserted into the enclosure,
`
`which is then inserted into a piece of medical equipment. The medical equipment, not the
`
`enclosure, provides the input/output device needed to interact directly with the portable
`
`computer. Further, it would not have been obvious to one skilled in the art to modify Jenkins's
`
`device or combine it with another reference and make the enclosure an input and output device.
`
`As provided above, Jenkins teaches away from such a modification by providing, "[t]he
`
`enclosure 2 is always connected either directly or indirectly to a structure 6 such as the console
`
`of a car, test equipment, house electrical system, other computers, etc." (See col. 7, lines 24-30.)
`
`Jenkins also fails to disclose or suggest the reader is configured to be a non-functioning shell
`
`when not connected to the portable computer, as recited in Claim 1.
`
`With respect to Claim 2, Jenkins fails to disclose or suggest that the reader comprises a
`
`CPU, memory, a graphics card, GPS, a sound card, a network card, RAM, ROM, a heat sink and
`
`a main circuit board.
`
`In particular, it appears that Jenkins discloses that the computer includes
`
`the processor, storage, etc.
`
`(See Claim 9.) One skilled in the art would not modify Jenkins's
`
`reader or combine Jenkins's structure with another to include these elements because the
`
`computer comprises these elements.
`
`In addition, including these elements on the reader would
`
`likely limit the security that Jenkins's syst
