`Understanding this Manual’s Purpose
`
`Understanding this Manual’s Purpose
`
`This 8700 User’s Manual provides step-by-step instructions for
`completing daily point-of-sale (POS) operations from the MICROS
`8700 Hospitality Management System (HMS).
`All operations described in this manual can be performed on a
`MICROS User Workstation (UWS), and most operations can be
`performed on a MICROS Hand-Held Touchscreen (HHT)—in which
`case the operation is highlighted with the HHT Icon (see page xiv). In
`those few cases where the HHT requires a different operating
`procedure than described in this manual, an HHT Note symbol (see
`page xiv) directing you to further instructions appears at the beginning
`of the procedure.
`This manual does not provide instructions for modifying or
`programming a complete database in the 8700 System Configurator;
`however, “User Workstation Procedures” beginning on page 11-1 does
`provide instructions for modifying certain database fields and/or files.
`If you require more information, see “Finding Additional Information”
`on page xvi.
`
`Who should be reading this manual?
`Anyone operating (or teaching someone else how to operate) MICROS
`HMS equipment:
`o Restaurant Personnel
`o MICROS Installers
`o MICROS Dealers
`
`What should the reader already know?
`The reader should already be familiar with the restaurant industry,
`including terminology and practices.

`
`Following the Organization and Structure
`
`This manual is designed so that most users will only need to read
`specific sections, where procedures are grouped with related functions.
`
`Organization
`Information in this manual is organized into the following chapters
`and appendices:
`Chapter 1: Introduction to the 8700 System describes the 8700
`System, including the software platform, hardware components, and
`transaction screens.
`Chapter 2: Basic User Workstation Operations covers basic UWS
`operations, which are not directly related to sales transactions or
`manager procedures.
`Chapter 3: Touchscreen Keys (UWS/3 only) explains how to operate
`the keys that are only available on a touchscreen.
`Chapter 4: Basic Guest Check Operations covers basic guest check
`operations, such as beginning and picking up checks and service
`totaling.
`Chapter 5: Post Menu Items describes the procedures for entering
`menu items.
`Chapter 6: Guest Check Adjustments shows how to adjust guest checks
`by adding discounts or service charges, and how to exempt a tax or
`autogratuity.
`Chapter 7: Correct an Error describes how to correct errors in an
`entry, enter customer order cancellations, and post menu item returns.
`Chapter 8: Print and Split Check Operations shows how to print and
`split guest checks.
`Chapter 9: Tender a Guest Check reviews procedures to tender (post
`payment to) a guest check.
`Chapter 10: Tip Operations presents banking procedures, tip
`declarations, and tip payout.
`Chapter 11: User Workstation Procedures describes manager
`procedures for modifying the system’s database.
`Appendix A: UWS Prompts and Messages explains all POS error
`and transaction privilege messages, operator prompts, activity
`messages, and communications messages.
`Appendix B: Printing and Remote Display explains printer output
`and VDU display, including examples.
`Appendix C: Retail Operations explains retail related functions.
`Appendix D: Quick Answers to Frequently Asked Programming
`Questions shows how to program various 8700 database files.

`
`Structure
`
`Each operation in this manual is described on a single page. The odd-
`numbered pages (or front of every page) provide step-by-step
`instructions for any System operator; the even-numbered pages (or
`back of every page) contain additional information for managers and
`installers.
`
`Front of Page:

`- Prompts
`
`Back of Page:
`- Description of Procedure
