`What is MetaCrawler?
`MetaCrawler is a World Wide Web search service developed in 1994 at the University of
`Washington by Erik Selberg, Oren Etzioni and Greg Lauckhart. It is now operated by
`go2net, Inc., an Internet content and technology company based in Seattle,
`Washington. In February 1997, go2net acquired the MetaCrawler from its original
`developers and is currently working on various improvements.
`MetaCrawler differs from other search services in that it does not maintain any local
`database. Rather, it relies on the databases of various Web-based sources. MetaCrawler
`sends your queries to several Web search engines, including Lycos, Infoseek,
`WebCrawler, Excite, AltaVista, and Yahoo.
`MetaCrawler queries the other search engines, organizes the results into a uniform
`format, ranks them by relevance, and returns them to the user. Of course, this means
`that MetaCrawler is slightly slower than other engines, but is more likely to obtain
`accurate results for your query.
`Why use MetaCrawler?
`MetaCrawler has many useful features which other services either do not have or are
`unable to provide. These include:
`Complete Coverage
`Because the Web is so large and changes so quickly, no one search engine can keep up.
`By utilizing many, MetaCrawler's potential for finding information is much greater. Using
`the MetaCrawler, you're able to see one page which contains all of the references from
`each service. This way you won't miss anything!
`Consistent Searching Syntax
`MetaCrawler offers a powerful search syntax, so you don't have to learn a different
`query language for each engine. In addition to the basic "any words", "all words", and
`"as a phrase" options, MetaCrawler recognizes a special search syntax that allows you to
`describe your desired results very specifically.
`Service Vote Rankings
`MetaCrawler combines and normalizes the confidence scores given to each reference by
`the services that return it. Thus, when MetaCrawler returns a reference, it sums the
`scores given by each service and presents them in a "voted" ordering, with the score
`(from 1 to 1000) presented in bold type next to each result.
`Why are you passing through ads? The old MetaCrawler didn't do that.
`The search engines from which the MetaCrawler obtains its results rely on advertising to
`generate revenue. Prior to go2net's acquisition of the MetaCrawler, it was a non-

`
`commercial service, and did not pass through the advertisements of the underlying
`engines. As it was a non-commercial endeavor, most search engines allowed the
`MetaCrawler to have access to their databases. However, some engines refused to serve
`results to MetaCrawler at one time or another. This is why a few major search engines
`are not currently utilized in our metasearches, though we are hoping to soon incorporate
`all the quality engines we do not already utilize.
`In addition to operating the MetaCrawler itself, go2net is in the course of establishing
`relationships with each of the supported engines, so that they can operate a viable
`business and we can continue to operate the MetaCrawler. Without these relationships,
`MetaCrawler could not continue to exist. It is go2net's goal to create mutually beneficial
`relationships with the best engines on the Net, so that the MetaCrawler will have a rock-
`solid foundation. Sooner or later, any Internet tool that utilizes other resources has to
`address these issues.
`We will continue to work with other search engine operators to benefit both our
`services, rather than attempting to capitalize on their generosity until it is exhausted.
`Why can't I get all results on one page anymore?
`We recognize the usefulness of having many results on one page. However, we must
`also balance our search output with the need to meet our commitments to the
`underlying engines in terms of passing through their advertisements. In light of this, we
`have set the default number of search results per page at 20. This can be adjusted up
`or down on the power search page. Advertisements are included in proportion to the
`number of results on a given page. We appreciate the great quantity of user feedback
`we received on this issue, and we are continuing to work to create more useful results.
`How can I keep abreast of MetaCrawler developments?
`There is an announcements-only, low traffic mailing list where you can hear about
`developments in the MetaCrawler. To join, email <majordomo@go2net.com> with
`subscribe metacrawler-announce
`in the message body.
`Known problems
`When I search "as a phrase", my results don't always contain the exact phrase.
`Some of the search engines MetaCrawler utilizes do not rigorously obey the "as a
`phrase" condition. We are currently debating how best to solve this problem; we would
`like to avoid reducing the scope of the metasearch on "as a phrase" queries, but it is
`under consideration.
`I try to customize, but it won't save my settings.

`Default method:
`Selects default search method. "Any" means any of the supplied words may be present in a search

`Results from:
`Filters results based on domain of origin. For example, filtering results to U.S. Educational Sites

`Results per page:
`Number of results per search output page.

`Maximum amount of time to wait for results. If the timeout is reached, the results that have been

`Results per source:
`Maximum number of results to retrieve from each engine. Some engines will not allow the

`when more exist.
`
`Sticky:
`
`This causes your preferences to "follow you" around the MetaCrawler. Every time you make a change

`MetaCrawler History
`(Also available: "A brief history of Metacrawler" by Erik Selberg.)
`go2net took over exclusive operation of the MetaCrawler from Netbot, Inc. in February,
`1997. MetaCrawler was originally developed by Erik Selberg and Oren Etzioni at the
`University of Washington, and was first released to the Net in June of 1995. The
`MetaCrawler remained in the care of Erik, Oren, and Greg Lauckhart until early 1997. It
`is now operated by go2net's magic makers, whose goal is to maintain MetaCrawler's
`position as the fastest and most useful metasearch tool on the Net.
`MetaCrawler has received numerous awards. In 1996, MetaCrawler was one of three
`finalists in the c|net Awards for Best Internet Search Engine. c|net said, "MetaCrawler is
`the place to start a targeted Web search [...] Chances are, you'll find exactly what
`you're looking for with MetaCrawler." WebCrawler has also described MetaCrawler as "an
`excellent search tool that combines results from [several engines] to create a
`comprehensive hotlist of Web resources for any query."
`Erik Selberg is a graduate student in the Computer Science & Engineering Department at
`the University of Washington, where he is working on his Ph.D. He completed his
`undergraduate degree at Carnegie Mellon University, obtaining undergraduate degrees in
`Mathematics / Computer Science and Logic & Computation in 1993, and a Masters in
`Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Washington in 1995.
`Dr. Oren Etzioni, UW Associate Professor, was a co-founder of Netbot, Inc. and serves
`as Chief Scientist there. He received his B.S. C.S. from Harvard in 1986, and Ph.D. from
`Carnegie Mellon University in 1991. He joined the University of Washington in February
`1991, and that fall he launched the Internet Softbot project. In 1993, Etzioni received an
`NSF Young Investigator Award, and in 1995, the Internet Softbot was one of five
`finalists in the National DISCOVER Awards for Technological Innovation in Computer
`Software.
`Greg Lauckhart is a junior at the UofW in computer engineering. He currently works for
`Netbot.

`
`A brief history of MetaCrawler
`by Erik Selberg
`As most of you are well aware, the MetaCrawler has undergone a significant
`metamorphosis. As with any major change at a popular site like MetaCrawler, there's
`been feedback, both positive and negative. I wanted to take this chance to tell everyone
`what's been happening for the past year or so, and the history behind it, so that people
`have a clear picture of what's going on with MetaCrawler and why.
`First, let me tell you about myself, as that provides the underlying motivation and
`direction for a lot of what's happening. I'm a fourth-year graduate student at the
`University of Washington, working toward my Ph.D., which I should receive sometime in
`mid-1998. My goal in coming to UW was to work with great people, do great research,
`and earn a doctorate.
`MetaCrawler was conceived in spring of 1995 by myself and my advisor, Oren Etzioni, as
`my master's-degree project. It grew rapidly in popularity once we released it publicly,
`gaining many new users after Forbes mentioned us in a cover-page article. Use jumped
`after C|Net reviewed all the major search services, ranking us No. 1, with AltaVista No. 2
`and Yahoo No. 3.
`As popularity grew, so did the demands of running MetaCrawler. I was spending all my
`time not doing research but maintaining the service. I was responsible for updating the
`Web pages, making sure MetaCrawler properly parsed the output of the services, adding
`new services, making sundry performance modifications, making sure the servers were
`up, etc. etc.
`Perhaps more importantly, MetaCrawler began to move away from being in the noise of
`the search services' use and toward becoming prominent as a repeat user. In May of
`1996, I (along with most of the rest of the AI department at UW) created NETbot. The
`two main technologies that went into NETbot were MetaCrawler and ShopBot, a
`comparison-shopping agent by Bob Doorenboos and Dan Weld. This seemed great for all
`involved, especially the end user, who would see a much more reliable, faster
`MetaCrawler, and would also get to use cutting-edge technology as soon as we cranked
`it out.
`Over the summer, Greg Lauckhart, a junior at UW who joined the MetaCrawler
`development team earlier that spring, and I moved MetaCrawler over to NETbot with
`little difficulty. When I left NETbot to return to research at UW, Greg had things well in
`hand. MetaCrawler was now under 7x24 monitoring service, the code was as reliable as
`ever, and we had made several performance improvements.
`NETbot found it problematic to develop both MetaCrawler and ShopBot simultaneously.
`There was a realization that NETbot was ill-equipped to handle negotiations with the
`search services for continued MetaCrawler use. Thus, the decision was made to license
`MetaCrawler to go2net, who could provide the resources necessary to make MetaCrawler
`viable as well as negotiate with the search services toward mutually beneficial
`arrangements. NETbot would then focus exclusively on ShopBot, which is now called

`
`Jango and should be available for beta sometime in April.
`This brings us to the present day. MetaCrawler is now in the capable hands of go2net,
`and I am still at UW working on the next generation of amazing search technology.
`Having MetaCrawler exist outside the scope of a university does bring certain
`requirements; namely, it has to make enough money to sustain the costs of the
`hardware and connectivity, as well as the salaries of the folks maintaining it!
`As you no doubt can tell, the current arrangement is that you're getting ads passed
`through. Yes, this does mean it'll take a little longer for things to render on your
`browser. Yes, the extra graphics that make the pages look cooler will also take a little
`longer to appear. Yes, the truth is that those advertising banners are here to stay -- they
`seem to be the easiest way to get someone else to pay for you to use the service.
`However, MetaCrawler is now in a state in which it can continue to exist and operate,
`and _still_ provide you with the best searching capabilities around. Furthermore, the
`team at go2net is working feverishly to add even more improvements in the service, so
`you'll continue to see enhancements.
`As for me, I'm confident that go2net will be able to take care of MetaCrawler and
`provide everyone with a great service. I'm still at UW, working on really cool projects.
`And if MetaCrawler was just what I did for my Master's, imagine what's coming for the
`Ph.D.!

`MetaCrawler on the desktop
`Launch Minicrawler!
`Good things come in small packages.
`So how come you never seem to have enough space on your monitor?
`Because, every time you want to look for that special Web page, your search engine of
`choice pastes a page with news, channels, maps, bells and whistles right on to your
`screen. It blots out everything else you've been doing and detracts from the reason you
`came there in the first place.
`And who wants to go through the hassle of pulling up an entire search page just to type
`in your keywords when you can keep the MetaCrawler query on your screen at all times?
`Fortunately, there are alternatives.
