`ABOUT MAMMA
`
`In 1996 we got the idea to provide a smart meta search tool for content retrieval on the World Wide Web. Since then we have expanded
`our vision to include new research tools and play a role as a free content aggregator for Web users. We hope you enjoy Mamma and find
`it a useful time saving mechanism in your research.
`
`If your organization is interested in a field specific software application we can build a search tool for you. Just write to us at
`sales@mamma.com.
`
`These are some of the fine people who are behind this project.

`
`Why use Mamma ?
`
`Most users are familiar with search engines like Lycos and Infoseek. Mamma is unlike such search engines.
`Mamma is what we call a smart meta search engine. This search will query the top search engines on the Web
`and create a virtual database.
`What's the advantage?
`Mamma offers simultaneous coverage of the major search engines in one simple query. Mamma analyses your
`queries and properly formats the words and syntax for each source it probes. So you no longer have to
`remember the syntax for each search engine. Mamma will then organize the results into a uniform format, and
`presents them by relevance and source. This is why we call the program "Mamma" she's the Mother of all
`search engines. Mamma will also allow users to use any type of search syntax so you don't need to learn a
`special syntax. Moreover, Mamma can include special syntax by itself for queries that are not correct. This is
`why we call it a smart meta search tool...both beginners and advanced users can benefit from it. Why search
`one when you can search all. Use MAMMA.

`How can I add my Web site to Mamma?
`Unfortunately you cannot add your URL to Mamma. This is because Mamma is a meta search engine, it works by querying other search
`engines. This means we have no control over the presence or absence of URLs in Mamma. To register your site with the top search
`engines, you may consider using Site-See:

`
` Why advertise on the Internet?
`The Web is the fastest growing medium in the world. Web advertising offers advantages that can't be matched by any conventional
`method of advertising such as television, radio, or print. Advantages like highly specific market segmentation, accurate statistics, real
`time response, quickest lead time and lower costs. And the biggest advantage is that you get a guarantee that your ad is actually seen
`by a person. You can't get that guarantee with the old conventional methods. We keep track of every ad view you get and every person
`who clicks on the ad. What other form of advertising can be so specific? If you want more information on advertising on the Internet

`composite results helps thousands of Internet users every day.
`
`
`Mamma is a huge hit with high end users such as business executives and
`power users who don't have time to search through several search engines.
`Our Winter 97 study indicated that those who liked the service, were
`information driven and liked the fact that the site contained few graphics. They
`were older (average: 48) and had a substantially high income (average:
`$64,400). Among the most reoccurring professions were: Programmers,
`Business Analysts, Lawyers and Business people.
`
`On average, our users use the Web for 19.2 hours a week. Mamma also
`boasts a diverse group of users with a notable portion of female users (31%
`of total sample). The results of our Winter 98 survey will soon be available, if
`you want a summary report please feel free to request one at
`sales@mamma.com
`
`
`
`What do terms like "impressions," "Page Views", "hits," and "click-throughs" mean?
`Some of the terms used in Internet advertising can be confusing. Here are a few of the important ones: Impressions is the number of
`times a visitor sees a page (and an advertisement) on the Web site. Banner ad prices at Mamma.com are based on impressions not
`hits. Hits simply refer to the number of times a server is accessed. It's a completely technical term and is meaningless to advertisers,
`since each page, graphic, or page element could count as a "hit" Advertising decisions should be based on impressions. So the next
`time someone tells you they have a million hits a day be sure to ask just how many page views or impressions they can sell you. A
`Click-through occurs when a visitor clicks on an advertisement, thereby linking the visitor to the advertiser's Web site. The Click-
`through Ratio is a term used to indicates the success of an advertisement (dividing click-throughs by total impressions). The quality
`of an ad greatly affects this ratio.
`
`
`How much traffic does Mamma.com receive?
`Many sites quote their traffic numbers in terms of hits. But be careful, as was explained above, hits are not a very meaningful measure
`for advertisers. A more meaningful measure of traffic is impressions, and Mamma.com receives an average of 2 million page
`impressions per month. Unique visitors is a bit harder to measure, since Web server technology is limited to measuring only
`unique incoming IP addresses, and large groups of users are assigned to single IP addresses by service providers. We log over
`250,000 unique IP addresses each month, which we estimate represents over 300,000 individuals per month.
`
`
`
`How much does advertising at Mamma.com cost?
`For a complete list of current advertising prices, please check our rate card.
`
`
`
`What kind of click-through ratios can I expect?
`
`Click-through ratios vary greatly depending on many factors: some of the important factors are brand recognition, product offering, the
`ad banner creative, the targeting criteria and the freshness of the ad banner. We have experienced click-through ratios as high as
`13.5%, and as low as less than 1%. The industry wide average for banner advertisements fluctuates around 2%. Key word
`advertising is popular and traditionally experience the highest click-through ratios, however the ad creative must be well matched with
`the ad creative, this is not a given so we at Mamma.com offer a trial run for those experimenting with key words. These runs are not
`free, but they tend to be more flexible in minimum purchasing requirements.
`How do I keep track of how well my banner(s) ad is doing?
`At Mamma.com, you can access your advertising statistics in real time . When you purchase a banner advertising program, we'll give
`you a user id and password that you can use to log into our servers at any time to view the status of your ad. You'll see the number
`of impressions for each of your ads in our system. Plus, you'll see the number of click-throughs.

`Hot Buttons
`
`Hot buttons are small graphic files locate on the gray side bar. These mini banners are slightly larger than Down Load Now buttons (see

`(120X60 Pixels).
`
`Download Now Icons
`
`Mamma.com offers software companies the possibility to electronically distribute their applications to a captive audience. A large portion
`of our audience are regular Internet users with interest in the novelties of the Web. We also have a broad range of users which makes
`the Mamma Web site a marquee venue for distribution. Such icons are gif files that are, at most, 90 x 32 pixels in size. Here are a
`couple of examples from our web site:
`
`Upon clicking on the icon, the user will download your software from your ftp server or bring the user to a download page on your Web
`site. The cost is $500.00 mo. (Home Page).

`SEARCH TIPS
`Mamma makes it easy for you to find what you need. Most common operators are interpreted by Mamma
`which properly formats queries and sends them to the best search engines on the Web. But we suggest using
`"+" and "-" for full effectiveness.
`It's this simple: Go to any Mamma search box and choose where you'd like to look using the small radio
`buttons. There you can search the Web (the default), Usenet or newswires. Additional features are being
`added. Next, type the words or phrases that best represent the information you're looking for (in which case
`you should chose the search as phrase option). Now click the "Search" button.
`Here are some suggestions for fine-tuning your search.
`Choose your words carefully.
`Be specific.
`When searching, consider words you might use to describe a subject if you were a webmaster.
`When looking for a phrase choose the "Phrase Search" option.
`You'll often be searching for a word pattern that appears just as you've typed it. Choose the "Phrase
`Search" option in order to force that exact sequence. This is very good way to look for a particular
`name.
`When you want to exclude words from the query use the minus (-) command in front of any word or
`phrase to screen out that term.
`Use the plus (+) command to identify "must have" words or phrases. Mamma will add a plus by default,
`so again...pick your words carefully.
`Another way of targeting a specific page is by conducting a document title search. All of the
`aforementioned operators apply when you select "document title" with the added capability of searching
`for a page title.
