`
`
`Terminology used for SU Management
`
`New terminology used in this manual associated with storage unit management includes the
`following:
`
`Storage Unit
`
`In the WM system, a storage unit is defined as a logical grouping of one or several amounts of
`material which can be managed within a warehouse as a unit that belongs together. Each storage
`unit has a number which identifies it, the storage unit (SU) number.
`
`Storage Unit Type
`
`Several different types of storage units can be defined within the system (for example, industrial
`pallets, baskets, tanks and containers). Each storage unit is assigned to a storage unit type.
`Storage unit types are classified according to their physical characteristics.
`
`Storage Unit Number
`
`The storage unit number is a number which clearly defines a storage unit within a client.
`
`Functions
`
`In addition to the capabilities already available using the SAP Warehouse Management system, the
`activation of SU management in your system enables you to access several new functions which
`are specifically designed for working with storage units.
`Some of these functions are already available in the existing WM system. The difference is that,
`with SU management, the primary input parameter is the SU number. Since much of the physical
`activity within your warehouse consists of moving storage units, now you can manage this activity
`in the WM system using storage unit numbers.
`With SU management, it is possible at any given time to know where (in which storage bin) each
`storage unit is located, the amount of material contained in it and which operations have been
`processed (or planned) for it.
`Using SU management, you can:
`¯
`create homogeneous storage units (storage units that contain only one material item)
`¯
`create heterogeneous (mixed) storage units (storage units that contain two or more material
`items)
`¯ place materials into storage via an identification (ID) point
`¯
`confirm storage unit movements
`You can enter a separate storage unit number for each transfer order item.
`¯ transfer storage units internally
`You can create internal transfer orders based on the storage unit number to move individual
`storage units to another location within the warehouse.
`¯ add stock to existing storage units
`¯ display storage units (that is, the actual contents of a storage unit)
`¯ print documents to accompany the storage unit
`
`SAP-00006898
`
`
`
`All of these functions are fully integrated for SU management within the existing WM system.

`
`Warehouse Management at the Storage Unit Level
`
`In the existing WM system, when SU management is not active, all stock (identified as separate
`quants) is managed at the storage bin level as illustrated below.
`

`
`With SU management, stock is managed at the pallet or storage unit level. One or several storage
`units can be located within a single storage bin and each storage unit can consist of one or more

`
`In the example below, a storage bin is displayed in which 200 boxes of red pencils and 50 boxes of
`blue pencils are stored. The stock is distributed on two pallets.
`The illustrations above show how this stock is managed based on whether the storage bin is
`SU-managed or not.
`Without SU management, there are a total of 2 quants (a specific quantity of red pencils and a
`specific quantity of blue pencils) in the storage bin (see the figure below). The system has no
`information about the pallets themselves.

`
`Description of a Storage Unit in the System
`
`In the system, a storage unit record consists of a header and at least one material data record
`(quant data record).
`The header contains information which is relevant for the entire storage unit and includes:
`¯ the SU number of the storage unit
`¯ the storage unit type (SUT) of the storage unit
`¯ the storage bin in which the storage unit is currently located
`¯ a status, which gives information about what is currently happening with the storage unit
`
`SAP-00006901
`
`
`
`Specific information about the stock contained in a storage unit is found in the material data
`record. The material record is already familiar to you in the existing system as a quant data record.
`For SU management, this information can be managed at the storage unit level.

`
`
`
`KBasic Set Up in the Warehouse Management System
`
`Before using storage unit management, you must first set up the default values for your warehouse.
`This initial configuration is accomplished using the customizing function.
`For complete information on how to set up your warehouse in the WM system, see "Using the
`Customizing Application" in the section "Maintaining Basic Data" in the MM Warehouse
`Management Guide.
`To access the configuration menus for Warehouse Management, select
`Tools --~ Customizing --~ Configuration --~ Logistics --~ Materials management --~ Warehouse
`management from the SAP main menu bar.
`
`Configuring the Warehouse
`
`You define the basic characteristics of your warehouse at the warehouse number level by
`selecting Master data --~ Warehouse number from the WM configuration menu bar.
`The following fields must be maintained to activate SU management in your system:
`
`Storage Unit Management
`
`Select the check box for the SU management field to identify the warehouse complex as one in
`which storage unit management is utilized.
`When you select this check box, you are not specifying which storage bins are to be SU-managed.
`Instead, you are telling the system to include data fields associated with SU management when
`data screens are displayed.
`If the SU management field is not selected, information associated with storage unit management
`will not appear on the screens displayed.
`
`Storage Unit Number Range
`
`You must enter a number in the Storage unitno.mg, field to identify a number range to be used for
`the assignment of sequential storage unit numbers.
`Afterwards, you must also maintain the number range for storage unit numbers by assigning
`starting and ending numbers for the number range interval. (See "Number Range Intervals" below.)
`
`SU Number Assignment Type
`
`The Assignment field identifies the type of number assignment for storage unit numbers.
`
`Code
`
`Assignment
`
`internal number assignment
`int. numbers + assignment of previously used numbers
`int. + ext. assignment and use of previous numbers
`internal and external number assignment
`external number assignment
`
`1 2 3 4 5
`
`Internal assignment
`
`SAP-00006903
`
`
`
`Internal assignment means that SU numbers are assigned sequentially by the WM system.
`
`External assignment
`
`External assignment indicates that the SU numbers are assigned manually. For example, you can
`use external assignment if you want to "take over" SU numbers that were assigned by a supplier or
`if you want to use numbers that are permanently engraved on pallets.
`Note
`The automatic internal assignment of storage unit numbers by the WM system applies to an entire
`client. In other words, all SU-managed warehouses within a client share the same number ranges.
`
`SU Number Intervals and Format
`
`The number that you enter in the Storage unit no.rag, field of the warehouse number configuration
`record must match the number that you use to identify the number range interval.
`
`Number Range Intervals
`
`To create number range intervals for storage units, select Events -~ Transfers -~ Number ranges
`from the WM configuration menu bar and then select Maintain number ranges for storage units
`from the list of objects.
`For complete instructions on how to maintain number ranges, see "Number Ranges" in the section
`"Special Topics" in the MM Warehouse Management Guide.
`
`SU Number Format
`
`The format of storage unit numbers can be influenced as follows:
`¯ Length
`You can limit the length of the SU number. If the length is not defined, the system automatically
`assigns a length of 20 digits.
`¯ Use of Check Digits
`You can configure the system so that the last digit in the SU number is used as a check digit.
`The check digit is mathematically computed by the system and reflects EAN norms.
`Each time you enter a storage unit number into the system, the system checks to see if the
`number is permissible.
`It is also possible to set the length and use check digits at the same time. In this case, the check
`digit is included in the total length defined.
`The possibilities described above can be configured as follows:
`
`1. Select Events --~ Transfers --~ Number ranges from the WM configuration menu bar.
`select Conversion of storage unit numbers from the list of objects.
`
`Then
`
`The system displays the screen for defining SU conversion exit parameters.
`If you only want to limit the length of the SU number to a specific number of positions, enter 1 in
`2.
`the SU conversion exit field.
`If you want to include the use of a check digit, enter 2 in the SU conversion exit field.
`Enter the desired length for your SU numbers in the Length of SUnumbers field.
`
`.
`4.
`
`To save the setting to the data base, select SU conversion --~ Save.
`
`SAP-00006904
`
`
`
`These settings apply to an entire client. Therefore, all warehouses within your client are
`affected by the default values entered into these fields.
`Caution
`Once you have defined the default values for check digits and length to issue storage unit numbers,
`you cannot change these settings in a productive system.
`
`Example
`
`If you choose a length of 10 digits and the SU conversion switch is set to "2", the first nine positions
`will be used for sequential SU number assignment and the last position will be used for the check
`digit.
`An example of the assignment of three sequential storage unit numbers - 914, 915 and 916 - each
`ten digits in length, using check digits, is illustrated as follows:

`0000009157
`0000009164
`
`SAP-00006905
`
`
`
`Configuring Storage Types
`In your system, you decide at the storage type level whether storage units will be managed within a
`particular storage type or not.
`When you designate a storage type to be used for SU management, all storage bins within that
`storage type will be SU-managed.
`This also means that all stock within the storage type will not be managed at the storage bin level,
`but rather - one step deeper - at the storage unit level.
`Note
`Define storage unit management for physical storage types only. Interim storage areas cannot be
`SU-managed.
`The following figure illustrates how storage unit management may be implemented in a
`warehousing complex.

`
`Defining Storage Types for SU Management
`
`For complete information about configuring storage types using the Customizing application, see
`the section "Setting Up the Warehouse Structure in the Warehouse Management System" in the
`section "Maintaining Basic Data" in the MM Warehouse Management Guide.
`
`1. To define a storage area for SU management, select Master data --> Storage type from the
`WM configuration menu bar.
`The system displays a list of existing storage types.
`2. To select an existing storage type, move the cursor to the desired storage type in the list and
`select Detail from the application toolbar.
`
`SAP-00006906
`
`
`
`To create a new storage type, select Edit--> New Entries from the menu bar.
`The system displays the screen for defining storage types.
`3. To identify this storage type as one using storage unit management, select the check box for the
`StorageUnitMgt field in the first section of the screen.
`Caution
`Before changing this field, check to insure that there is no stock in the storage type.
`
`Mixed Storage
`
`In the Mixed storage data field in the stock placement section of the storage type record, you can
`define how mixed storage is managed for storage bins within a storage type.
`For storage types in which SU management is not active, you can enter x in this data field (allows
`several quants in one storage bin) or you can leave it blank (allows only one quant in a storage
`bin).
`For bins in storage types that are SU-managed, you have several options for defining how mixed
`storage is implemented. These options are listed in the table below.
`
`Code
`
`Stock Placement
`
`mixed storage not allowed
`several homogeneous storage units per bin
`mixed batch storage (for SU-managed block storage)
`one mixed storage unit per bin
`mixed storage without limitation (in extreme cases:
`several mixed storage units in one storage bin)
`
`A C P X
`
`Additional Settings
`
`For the implementation of storage unit management, there are several additional parameters that
`can be maintained at the storage type level. These include:
`¯
`Identification point
`¯ Pick point
`¯
`ID Point for Storage Type
`¯ Pick Point for Storage Type
`More information about these fields is provided in .S.tock....p.!acements and Stock F~emoya!s.

`
`Stock Placements
`
`This section describes how merchandise is placed into storage using storage unit (SU)
`management.
`First, we describe how storage units are created in the system, and how to use the most important
`functions associated with stock placements. These include
`¯ how to create homogeneous and mixed storage units
`¯ the addition of stock to an existing storage unit
`¯ the confirmation of transfer orders for storage units
`Finally, we explain how stock placements are carried out using identification (ID) points and how ID
`points are created and used in the context of an SU-managed warehouse.

`
`Creating Storage Units
`
`Storage units are created when materials are placed into storage types in which SU management is
`active. This takes place as a normal process when you create transfer orders as illustrated below.

`¯
`
`A separate item is created for each material to be transferred which identifies both a source and a
`destination storage bin.
`When you create transfer orders for stock placements involving storage units, this means that:
`¯
`If a homogeneous storage unit is placed into storage, this stock placement is recorded in a
`single transfer order item.
`If a mixed storage unit is placed into storage, a separate transfer order item is created for each
`material item in the storage unit.
`In this case, all transfer order items have the same destination storage bin since they are all part
`of the same storage unit.
`You can create transfer orders in the WM system from transfer requirements or you can create
`them manually.
`For both options, you can:
`¯
`create homogeneous storage units
`¯
`create mixed storage units
`¯ add materials to (expand) existing storage units
`In the following explanations and examples, all stock placements are carried out by transferring
`
`SAP-00006909
`
`
`
`stock from a storage type which is not SU-managed (goods receipt area) into an SU-managed
`storage type.

`
`
`KStock Placements Using Transfer Requirements
`
`A transfer requirement indicates that a stock movement has been planned. It represents a
`requirement to move a specific quantity of material into or out of the warehouse.
`For complete information about working with transfer requirements, see the section "Transfer
`Requirements" in the MM Warehouse Management Guide.
`
`How Transfer Requirements are Created
`
`As a rule transfer requirements are created automatically when a goods movement is posted in the
`Inventory Management (IM) system.
`It is possible, however, to create transfer requirements manually using the WM system.
`
`Using Transfer Requirements to Create Transfer Orders
`
`There are several ways to create a transfer order from a transfer requirement in the WM system.
`These ways are described in the section "Transfer Orders" in the MM Warehouse Management
`Guide. Regardless of how they are created, you will eventually display an overview screen with a
`list of transfer requirement items with open quantities.
`From this overview screen, you have several possibilities to create storage units.
`
`Creating Homogeneous Storage Units
`
`You create homogeneous storage units from the overview screen by entering the quantity of
`material for a transfer requirement item in the list displayed. Afterwards, supported by system
`suggestions, you divide this quantity into separate storage units and create separate transfer order
`items accordingly.
`How you process the creation of a transfer order for storage units is practically identical to the
`process for creating a transfer order in the existing system without using SU management. The only
`difference is that you can enter SU numbers externally or the system assigns them internally on the
`appropriate screens.
`
`EXAMPLE
`
`To create a transfer order using homogeneous storage units from the transfer requirement item
`overview screen, complete the following steps:
`1. Select the check box in the first column for the desired item, change the quantity in the Open
`quantity field to the desired quantity and select Create TO in foregr, to create the transfer order
`in the foreground.
`The system displays the transfer order preparation screen.
`2. On the preparation screen, you have the same "normal" functions that exist in the WM system
`without SU management to enter or change data for a transfer order.
`On this screen, you can also manually enter storage unit numbers for each of the storage units.
`Select Create TO in foregr, to complete the preparation screen for the transfer order in the
`foreground or select Create TO in backgr, for background processing.
`3. To create the transfer order, select Create.
`If you decide to process the creation of the transfer order in the foreground on the preparation
`screen, the transfer order item screen is displayed.
`On the transfer order item screen you have the possibility to influence the creation of the transfer
`
`SAP-00006911
`
`
`
`order item at the "lowest level". You can also enter the storage unit number on this screen.
`
`Creating Mixed Storage Units
`
`Mixed storage units contain two or more material items.
`
`EXAMPLE
`
`To create a mixed storage unit containing three separate items from the transfer requirement
`overview screen, and complete the following steps:
`1. Select the check boxes for three separate items in the first column, and change the quantities in
`the Open quantity data fields to the desired quantities.
`Select Create SU (single) from the menu bar to create a single storage unit.
`The system displays the transfer order preparation screen for the storage unit.
`2. On the preparation screen, you must enter the storage unit type (SUT) of the storage unit that
`you are creating in the Storage unit type field on this screen.
`3. Select Create trans.orderto complete the preparation screen for the transfer order.
`If they were not manually entered, the system assigns the storage bin and SU number for the
`storage unit.
`On this screen you also have the option of selecting Reset transfer order to reset the transfer
`order. This makes it possible for you to enter a new SU number and/or destination storage bin.
`4. Select Create to create the transfer order.
`A separate transfer order item is created for each material item in the storage unit.
`If an error occurs when you create a transfer order item (for example, if you attempt to store a
`mixed pallet in a storage area where mixed storage is not allowed), the system displays the item
`screen when the error occurs for the corresponding SU item.
`
`Adding Materials to an Existing Storage Unit
`
`Using SU management, you can add materials to existing storage units. To do this, you must know
`the number of the storage unit to which you want to add stock.
`
`EXAMPLE
`
`Using the example above, to add materials to an existing storage unit, from the transfer
`requirement overview screen, complete the following steps:
`1. Select the check box for the desired item in the first column. Change the quantity in the Open
`quantity data field to the desired quantity. Select Goto -~ Generate TO items --> Addition to SU
`to add materials to an existing storage unit.
`The system displays a pop-up window which requires the entry of an existing storage unit
`number.
`2. Enter the SU number of the existing storage unit in the pop-up window and select Copy.
`The system displays the transfer order preparation screen for the storage unit.
`On the transfer order preparation screen, the system marks check boxes in the A column to
`identify items that already exist in the storage unit.
`The item(s) that are to be added to the storage unit appear in the list with the existing items.
`3. To create the transfer order items to be added to the storage unit, select Create trans.order.

`
`
`Creating Transfer Orders Manually
`
`How you manually create transfer orders when SU management is not active in your system is
`described in "Creating Transfer Orders" in the section "Transfer Orders" in the MM Warehouse
`Management Guide.
`When you create transfer orders manually, the same functions are available as those for creating
`transfer orders with transfer requirements. You can
`¯
`create homogeneous storage units
`¯
`create mixed storage units
`¯ add items to an existing storage unit
`These functions are described below.
`
`Creating Homogeneous Storage Units
`
`To create homogeneous storage units manually

`
`
`
`Automatic Storage Bin Search
`
`In the Warehouse Management system, you define strategies the system uses to "automatically"
`search for storage bins for stock placements and removals. Storage bin search strategies in the
`WM system are described fully in the section "Storage Bin Search Strategies" in the MM
`Warehouse Management Guide.
`When SU management is active, the WM system automatically finds storage bins in basically the
`same manner as in the standard system without SU management. In particular, the way stock
`placements for homogeneous storage units are handled has not changed from the methods with
`which you are already familiar.
`However, one question must be discussed regarding mixed pallets: "How does the system search
`for storage bins with mixed storage units?"
`
`Placing Mixed Pallets into Storage
`
`Since mixed storage units contain more than one material item, the system must select one of
`these materials to use as a basis for the storage bin search process. The selection of this material
`item is purely arbitrary.
`The characteristics defined for the selected material are then used to carry out the automatic
`storage bin search function. All other material items contained in the storage unit must follow and
`are transferred to the storage bin selected for the material item that was chosen for the search
`process.
`
`System Checks
`
`Independent of the material selected by the system for the automatic storage bin search function,
`the normal system checks are carried out for all materials in the storage unit (such as hazardous
`materials checking or mixed storage) to insure that no errors occur for stock placements.
`If an error is found during one of these checks, the transfer order item screen appears for the
`corresponding material item.
`
`SAP-00006916
`
`
`
`Confirming Transfer Orders
`
`When you confirm a transfer order or a transfer order item, you are verifying that the required
`quantity of material has actually been transferred from one location to another and that the
`processing of the transfer order or item has been completed. See "Confirming Transfer Orders" in
`the section "Transfer Orders" in the MM Warehouse Management Guide for complete information
`on how to confirm transfer orders.
`When SU management is active in your system, you have three options for confirming transfer
`orders. You can
`¯
`confirm a complete transfer order
`¯
`confirm one of several items in a transfer order
`¯
`confirm open items for a single storage unit
`The first two options are available in the standard system. The third option is only available for
`SU-managed warehouses.
`
`1. To confirm a transfer order for a storage unit, select TransOrder ~ Confirm ~ Storage unit
`from the WM menu bar.
`2. Enter the storage unit number; enter h (process in foreground) or d (process in background) in
`the control area of the initial screen and select ENTER.
`The system displays a list of all the open transfer order items for the storage unit.
`3. From this point you confirm transfer orders with or without differences using the same
`procedures described for the standard system without SU management.
`
`SAP-00006917
`
`
`
`Displaying the Contents of a Storage Unit
`
`With the integration of SU management in the WM system, the capability to display SU numbers
`has been added to functions in which stock review screens are normally displayed.
`From the master data area, it is possible for you to display the storage unit numbers for all
`evaluations (for example, on the stock overview screen).
`In addition, there are other transactions which also allow you to display information about storage
`units. For example, you can display the header information for a storage unit or the stock contained
`in a particular storage unit.
`To display storage unit information
`
`1. Select Master data --> Storage unit --> Display or Stock from the WM menu bar.
`The system displays the initial screen.
`2. In both cases, you must enter the SU number in the Storage unitfield on the initial screen and
`select ENTER.
`3a. If you select Display, information about the storage unit itself is displayed.
`From this screen, you can select Storage bin to display information about the storage bin or
`Stockto display the contents of the storage unit in an item list.
`3b. If you select Stock and there is only one item in the storage unit, the system displays
`information about the quant. If there is maore than one item in the storage unit, the system
`displays the stock item list.
`From this list, select Storage bin to display information about the storage bin. To display
`information about a quant, move the cursor to a line in the item list and select Quant.

`
`Identification Points
`
`Frequently, there are so-called identification (ID) points for certain storage types (such as high rack
`storage areas) in many warehouses. The transfer of all storage units into these storage types must
`be accomplished via the ID point.
`
`What is the Purpose of an ID Point?
`
`¯ Storage units are identified by their numbers when placed into storage and the contents of each
`storage unit can be displayed on the computer screen. This makes it possible to make a rough
`comparison of the system information with the physical contents of the storage unit.
`¯ An automatic contour control is often carried out at the ID point to determine whether the
`storage unit was loaded properly.
`¯ Frequently, the mode of transport is changed at the ID point. For example, storage units are
`often transferred from a fork lift to a conveyor.
`¯ The destination storage bin in the final storage type is determined at the ID point. Since the
`destination bin is not assigned until the storage unit arrives at the ID point, the location of the bin
`is issued based on the most current information about the occupiable space in the storage area.
`The transfer of stock from the goods receipt area via an ID point into a high rack storage area is
`illustrated in the figure below.

`
`How is an ID Point Defined?
`
`Identification points are defined in the WM system as storage types.
`To avoid misunderstanding, definitions are provided for the following terminology:
`

`
`
`
`The ID point storage type is an ID point that has been defined as a separate storage type in the
`system. ID point storage types are not entered into the storage type search strategy configuration
`table.
`
`Final Storage Type
`
`The final storage type is the final destination for a storage unit during stock placements. Final
`storage types must be entered into the table for storage type searches.
`In the system, you must define the storage types so that a link exists between the ID point and the
`final storage type.
`When creating transfer orders to move storage units from the goods receipt area into a final storage
`type (such as high rack storage), the system recognizes that an ID point is assigned to the final
`storage type. When you create the transfer order, instead of assigning the storage unit to the final
`storage type, it directs the storage unit to the ID point. When the storage unit reaches the ID point,
`it is received with a specific transaction which then creates a tra
