`
`What is Warehouse Management?
`
`Warehouse management is the implementation of advanced technology and strategies to optimize
`all activities in the warehouse. Computer support of the organization and management of
`warehouses has become imperative for the efficient and effective processing of logistic
`requirements within a company. The SAP Warehouse Management (WM) system provides the
`flexible, automated support that enables you to:
`¯ define and manage storage areas and bins in the warehouse
`¯ monitor stock movements
`¯ take inventory at the storage bin level
`¯ ensure that stock posted in materials management is the same as the stock in the warehouse
`¯
`integrate with materials management, product planning, and sales and distribution
`The WM system enables you to define and manage complex warehouse structures within a
`company. The structures can consist of different warehouse sub-areas (storage types) such as
`high rack storage and block storage. You can manage stocks in randomly organized warehouses
`and in warehouses with fixed storage bins.
`The WM system supports the processing of all relevant movements, including goods receipt and
`goods issue initiated by the Inventory Management (IM) system, goods issue from the Sales and
`Distribution (SD) system, as well as movements within a warehouse, such as stock transfers.
`In the Warehouse Management system, you create transfer orders based on transfer requirements.
`Transfer orders trigger and control the physical movement of goods within the warehouse. The
`physical movements are supported and verified by transfer orders. You can also process stock
`transfers from one location to another within a warehouse with transfer orders.
`With its inventory functions, the WM system ensures that book inventories in the Inventory
`Management system match the stock in the warehouse, at any time. Because SAP components
`are fully integrated, you do not need separate interface programs between the Inventory
`Management system and the Warehouse Management system.
`
`SAP-00006703
`
`
`
`Integration of the Warehouse Management System with other
`SAP R/3 System Components
`
`Within the SAP R/3 System, the WM system is integrated and linked with four components:
`Inventory Management (IM), Quality Management (QM), Product Planning (PP), and Sales and
`Distribution (SD). Specific functions that originate in these systems result in automatic actions or
`reactions within the WM system.
`The Inventory Management system ensures that a company’s stock inventories are managed
`according to quantity and value. Using the Quality Management system, goods are methodically
`selected for inspection to insure that a quality product is delivered to the customer. In the Product
`Planning system, the need for materials is forecast through different processes. Production is
`controlled through production orders according to quantities and costs. The Sales and Distribution
`system processes the customer orders. It ensures that the goods are delivered on schedule and
`that invoices are prepared. All necessary availability checks and balances are performed by these
`integrated components.

`
`
`
`Maintaining Basic Data
`
`Before you can use the Warehouse Management (WM) system to assist you in managing the
`warehousing functions in your company, you must first define:
`¯ the structure (physical layout) of your warehouse complex
`¯
`information about goods stored in your warehousing facilities
`The system uses the data stored in both the warehouse and material master records to optimize
`the process of stock transfers.
`In this section, we describe how to define the structure of your company’s warehousing facilities in
`the WM system. First, we discuss some special terms that are used in the WM system. Then we
`describe how to use specific tasks within the WM system to create and change information about
`storage bins.
`Next we describe the purpose of the material master record and how to maintain this record within
`the WM system. First, we discuss some general aspects about the use of the material master within
`the SAP System. Then we describe how to use specific tasks within the WM system to maintain
`the material master data.
`As a component of the SAP System, the WM system works with other Materials Management (MM)
`applications, such as Inventory Management (IM), Quality Management (QM), Sales and
`Distribution (SD), and Product Planning (PP). Lastly, we tell you how to define the connection
`between the WM system and the IM system.

`
`KThe Warehouse Structure in the Warehouse Management
`System
`
`The physical storage facilities of a company may exist in one or more physical buildings and can
`consist of several types of storage (for example, high rack storage, block storage, picking areas)
`and other areas within the warehouse (such as interim staging areas for goods receipt and goods
`issue).
`This physical warehouse complex can be defined in the Warehouse Management (WM) system
`using a single warehouse number. Each one of the various storage facilities or areas can be
`identified as a storage type. A storage type is defined by its spatial, technical or organizational
`factors.
`For example, the physical warehouse structure can be represented in the WM system as a single
`warehouse consisting of the following storage types:
`¯ goods receipt area
`¯ goods issue area
`¯ high rack storage area
`¯ picking area (with fixed storage bins)
`¯ block storage

`
`I
`
`I
`
`A storage type consists of a number of slots which are called storage bins in the WM system. A
`storage bin is the smallest addressable unit of space in a warehouse. Since the address of a
`storage bin is frequently derived from a three-dimensional coordinate system, you also refer to the
`location of the bin as a coordinate; for example 02-04-03 refers to row 02, stack 04, level 03.
`Within a storage type, you can classify storage bins according to the type of bin, for example, small
`bins or large bins.
`You can also assign storage bins to a storage section. A section generally includes all bins that
`
`SAP-00006706
`
`
`
`have certain characteristics in common, such as bins for "fast-moving items" near a goods issue
`area.
`Storage bin types and storage sections for a storage type are depicted in the following figure:

`Section 002 (Slow movers)
`
`Storage type 001: High rack
`
`The existence of a quantity of material in a storage bin is referred to in the WM system as a quant.
`Example 1: If boxes of red pencils and blue magic markers - two different material numbers -
`are located in the same storage bin, there are two quants in that bin.
`Example 2: If three batches of piston rings - although exactly the same material number, but
`produced in different lots (with different batch numbers) - are located in the same storage bin,
`there are three quants in that bin.
`The same material produced at different time periods generally constitutes only one quant.
`For each storage type, you can define whether quants for only a single material can be stored or
`whether quants from different materials or batches can be stored.
`The following figure depicts four storage bins within a storage type.

`Setting Up the Warehouse Structure in the Warehouse
`Management System
`
`Before you can begin to work with the Warehouse Management (WM) system, you must set up
`your company’s warehouse structure as described in T I3e.W.a.re!3.o.u.se..St.ructure..in.t!3.e..Ware.!~.o.use ....
`.M~:~..a.~.e.m.e..~.L~.y.~.~e.m
`
`IStorage
`I
`
`type H
`
`In order to set up the warehouse structure, you must:
`1. Define the warehouses, which are identified by warehouse numbers in the WM system.
`2. Define the types of storage available in each warehouse.
`3. Define storage bins for each storage type.
`These three steps are explained individually in this section.
`
`Using the Customizing Application
`
`To set up the warehouse structure in the WM system, you need to maintain data in several tables.
`To facilitate table maintenance tasks, the SAP R/3 System has implemented an application that it
`calls Customizing. In the Customizing application, SAP has grouped all the tables that you need to
`maintain for specific tasks into a single menu. Using the Customizing application, you can quickly
`and easily access all the tables that you need to maintain.
`To access the configuration menus for Warehouse Management from the SAP main menu bar,
`select Tools --> Customizing --> Configuration --> Logistics --> Materials
`management --> Warehouse management
`All of the following tasks are selected from the Warehouse Management configuration menu bar.

`
`
`Data at the Warehouse Level
`
`You identify each warehousing complex with a
`¯ warehouse number
`¯
`region (for processing hazardous materials)
`¯
`short description
`For each warehouse you define default values and control indicators that are valid for all storage
`types within that warehouse.
`¯ units of measure
`¯ number ranges
`¯ picking methods
`¯ handling of inventory differences
`
`Creating Warehouses
`
`To define a warehouse in the WM system, you must enter a warehouse number in a data base
`table. In the following we describe how to maintain the appropriate tables using the Customizing
`application.
`
`1. To access the table in which you define a warehouse, select Masterdata --> Warehouse
`number
`The system displays a list of previously defined warehouses.
`
`2. Select Edit --> New entries.
`The system displays the data entry screen for defining new warehouses and their
`characteristics.
`For each warehouse you want to create, enter a number that identifies it in the first section.
`You can also enter a region code and short description. The text you enter here is used on
`subsequent screens and/or printed out on reports.
`In the remaining sections on the screen, you can define default values that are valid for the
`warehouse number and for all the storage areas and storage bins within the warehouse.
`
`.
`
`4. To save the data you enter, select Table view-~ Save.
`The system returns to the previous screen.
`
`5. To return to the configuration menu bar for warehouse management, select Table view-~ Exit.
`
`Storage Types
`
`For each warehouse, you can define several types of storage areas. These are called storage
`types in the WM system. For each storage type, you predefine the features of the storage type
`and specify the control indicators that determine how the storage type is handled by the system.
`
`Data at the Storage Type Level
`
`You define the characteristics of a storage type within a warehouse by setting a number of
`indicators in the storage type record.

`
`Creating Storage Types
`
`To define a storage type (for example, high rack storage or block storage) for a warehouse in the
`WM system, you must enter a storage type in a data base table. Using the Customizing
`application, you maintain the tables as described below:
`
`1. To access the table in which you define a storage type, select Masterdata --> Storage type
`The system displays a list of previously defined storage types.
`
`2. Select Edit --> New entries.
`The system displays the data entry screen for storage types.
`3. For each storage type you want to create, enter a warehouse number and a storage type. You
`can also enter a short description of the storage type. The text you enter here is used on
`subsequent screens and/or printed out on reports.
`The data entry screen for characteristics is divided into three sections. In the first two sections,
`you set indicators for stock placement and stock removal. In the third section, you can enter
`blocking and physical inventory indicators. You can centrally block a storage type for stock
`movements (for example, due to an annual inventory count) by setting the two blocking
`indicators in this screen. For additional methods for blocking the warehouse as well as quants,
`see ~.!o.c..l~in.g.:..
`
`4. To save the data you enter, select Table view-~ Save.
`The system remains on the current screen.
`
`5. To return to the configuration menu bar for warehouse management, select Table view ~> Exit.
`Some control indicators for storage types are mutually exclusive; some combinations of indicators
`may not be allowed by legal or internal directives. In most cases, an error message will appear if a
`combination is not allowed. You should carefully check and test any new combinations before they
`are released in the production system.
`
`Storage Bins
`
`Data at the Bin Level
`
`SAP-00006711
`
`
`
`Data for a storage bin is stored in the warehouse master record. For each bin, the following
`information is maintained.
`¯
`location of the storage bin. You can manually create the location coordinates or have the
`system automatically assign coordinates when it creates storage bins. The location of the
`storage bin is identified by the
`
`- warehouse number
`
`- storage type
`
`- storage bin location coordinates
`¯ storage bin characteristics. You maintain the following characteristics data with the WM system
`data maintenance tasks:
`- section within a storage type
`
`-
`type of storage bin
`- maximum weight capacity
`
`-
`
`fire containment section
`
`- blocking indicators
`¯ storage and inventory information. This data is updated by the system as a result of a goods
`movement. Storage and inventory information includes:
`- date of the last activity
`- volume and weight of stored material
`
`- number ofquants
`
`-
`
`inventory counts
`
`Data at the Quant Level
`
`If the storage bin is occupied, the system maintains data about the materials (quants) that are
`stored at that location.
`¯ material identification
`- plant
`
`- material number
`
`- batch number
`
`- stock category
`
`- special stock indicator and number
`¯ data about the last transfer
`¯ data about the last inventory
`¯
`stock amounts, for example stock that is available or stock that is being transferred to or from a
`storage bin
`¯ blocking indicators
`To create and maintain storage bins, you use tasks within the WM application. See .~e ...B...in.s..
`
`SAP-00006712
`
`
`
`Storage Bins
`
`There are two tasks available for maintaining the warehouse master record. You can
`¯

`The fields in which you enter data to create a group of storage bins are defined below.
`Current number
`You allocate a serial number to Current number of every individual template that you use to
`generate storage bins. The system uses this number when it generates the storage bins.
`Template
`In this field, you specify the numeric and non-numeric characters from which the bin coordinate is
`built. The character N indicates a numeric value; the character C indicates an unchangeable
`constant; the character A is used for alphabetic incrementation. For the example above, the
`template is
`NNCNCNNNCC
`02 - 1 - 020
`(The last two characters of the template are only used to fill out the field.)
`Structure
`In this field, you group together the numeric characters (N-values of the template) into individual
`variable sections. These sections are counted by the system.
`In the above example, the structure is
`AA B CCC
`02- 1- 020
`
`SAP-00006714
`
`
`
`Note
`You must follow exactly the positions of the numeric characters in the template.
`First coordinate
`Specifies the storage bin to be created first.
`02-1 -020
`Last coordinate
`Specifies the last storage bin to be created.
`03-2-040
`Increment
`Defines the increment for the individual variable parts of the template.

`The material master record contains information about the material, information that is used by all
`departments within a company. Each department has its own "view" of the data that is stored in
`the material master record. Just as data in the material master record is maintained for specific
`departments, such as quality assurance, sales or product planning, some of the data is used
`specifically by the Warehouse Management (WM) system.
`
`Organization Level for Data
`
`The data for a "view" is assigned to a specific organization level. The tasks to maintain and
`display the WM data from the material master use the view- organization level structure.
`Therefore, when you create or maintain data for a material, you must first specify the view and the
`organization level for the material.
`
`Relevant Data for the Warehouse Management System
`
`For the WM system, the following data is relevant.
`material and how the material should be handled.
`¯ general data
`- material number

`
`Maintaining the Material Master Record
`
`The WM system provides two tasks for maintaining warehouse information for the material.

`creating warehouse data
`¯
`changing warehouse data
`For the following functions, we describe accessing each task from the WM menu bar, not the SAP
`main menu bar. To access the WM menu bar select Logistics -~ Materials
`management--~ Warehouse management from the SAP menu bar.
`See Getting Started with the R/3 System for detailed information about how to select tasks and get
`help.
