`
`to determine whether the received ETag value matches the current ETag value for the content of
`
`the object referenced in the request (i.e. the URI of the file conditionally requested).
`
`179. After the comparison, if there was a matching ETag value for the content of an
`
`object referenced in the conditional GET request the Twitch web servers determined that the
`
`cached content was still the valid content, and therefore served a 304 NOT MODIFIED response
`
`message indicating to the browser that it has valid rights to keep using the cached contents for
`
`the duration specified by the max-age value set by Twitch and also sent in the 304 response. If
`
`the comparison resulted in a non-matching ETag value for the content of an object referenced in
`
`the conditional GET request the Twitch web servers determined that the browser did not have the
`
`valid content in its cache for that URI, and served a 200 OK response message containing the
`
`valid content, the valid ETag value, and a new max-age specifying how the time duration for
`
`which the new content would be valid to be cached and used by the browser without subsequent
`
`revalidation.
`
`180. Additional details regarding the receipt of conditional GET requests, comparison
`
`of ETags in conditional GET requests and service of 200 OK and 304 NOT MODIFIED
`
`response messages by the Twitch web servers are provided in paragraphs 90, 100, 101, and 102

`
`therein, which are incorporated herein by reference.
