Legal tech disruptors vLex and Fastcase merge to form world’s largest global law library

Collaboration with Judicata Technology Moves One Step Closer to Universal DMS

Washington, DC (August 18, 2022) – Docket Alarm by Fastcase today released a powerful new business intelligence tool for law firms and corporate legal departments. Dubbed simply as “Motions in Federal Courts,” the new feature creates a new search engine over specific motion types, as well as analytics for individual law firms, judges, and nature of suit codes. The company will launch and showcase the tool at the 2022 ILTACon conference in Washington, D.C. next week.

The new Motions in Federal Courts search empowers lawyers to microtarget specific types of motions and to create customized analytics. This enables Docket Alarm users to dive into both their own firm’s litigation history — as well as opposing law firms — providing the market’s most precise and powerful tool for internal and external business intelligence.

The new feature uses Judicata technology to categorize millions of motions from almost 5 million cases by type, stage, nature of suit, law firm, state, judge, and much more. Lawyers can create precise motion searches for the strategy of opposing counsel, to analyze the effectiveness of their own strategy, or to find precise templates for new motions, targeted to specific judges and courts. Fastcase acquired Judicata’s technology stack and team in 2020.

Docket Alarm is excited to announce a new integration with Courtroom Insight, a litigation knowledge management solution. The integration is set to improve the way the legal publishing world works together on connecting and sharing data to serve clients with better access to facts and research. Now, Courtroom Insight (CRI) users benefit from Docket Alarm's database of over half a billion documents when browsing expert witness and judicial profiles.

What is Courtroom Insight?

Courtroom Insight helps firms manage litigation knowledge and is used by Am Law 200 law firms so they can combine information about private firms with other important data. Firms can gather and analyze the information they need for cases about judges, arbitrators, expert witnesses, and attorneys, which help them strengthen their knowledge about the system. The platform allows attorneys to find the best expert witnesses out there, select the right arbitrator, and evaluate judges.

What is Docket Alarm?

Docket Alarm helps lawyers search for lawsuits and cases from anywhere within any court system. Access to previous arguments and data helps firms improve how they approach each of their cases. Docket Alarm has over 500 million legal records stored in its database, and over 300,000 new documents and dockets are added every day. The database covers information about court litigation in 33 states. Users can even set up alerts to get new court activity updates, like when a new lawsuit is filed against something matching their search.

How to Find a Case When There Is No Good Case Type Field

Search Tip: Find a case of a particular type even when there is no good case type field

Sometimes you want to search for a case by its subject matter, but there is no good case "type" or "nature of suit" field that captures this. Examples of specific subjects may include, Legal Malpractice, Trade Secret, and other lawsuits based on a specific statute. Normally, you would search with the

type

nos

field, but in these cases, there isn't enough detail in the case type field to really help you find what you're looking for. Enter the

documenttext

search field. This field will find dockets that have documents that mention a particular word. So for example searching

documenttext:("legal malpractice")

will find all dockets that have documents that mention this phrase. This is a decently good way to find cases that have issues that are only mentioned in underlying documents.

You can also combine the two forms of searching. So, if you wanted to really cover all your bases with legal malpractice, for example, you would search for:

documenttext:("legal malpractice") or type:(legal w/2 malpractice)

Choose the type of document you are trying to enhance, whether that be a list of cases, a list of parties, or a one-off case dinger. Once you've chosen your settings, in just a few clicks, the enhanced document will be returned back to you.

On the dashboard, you'll see an email address. Forward the report to the email address and you'll receive clean, organized data that is prepped to be easily readable by attorneys and analysts. You can further automate Docket Alarm Enhance by setting up an auto-forwarding rule in your email, particularly helpful when you want to Enhance reports that typically arrive by email.
